Deflecting palm on altered damage

Asked by Eldrazi_Nugget 6 years ago

I have Gisela, Blade of Goldnight out, and my opponent hits me for 10 damage, I cast Deflecting Palm. My damage would be halved by Gisela's ability, but does that activate on damage that has been prevented? My question is if I will be redirecting a halved damage, or if I would redirect the full damage. And would that redirected damage be doubled as well? Thanks in advance!

Damage multipliers or reducers happen as the damage is applied, not when it's assigned.

When Deflecting Palm prevents the 10 damage (presumably would have been doubled to 20 if it was dealt), it will deal 10 damage to Gisela's controller, however when the damage is applied it will be halved to 5.

You get to decide what happens to the damage being prevented by Deflecting Palm, and the damage it deals back will be doubled. It will be either 10 or 20 damage.

If multiple replacement and/or prevention effects could apply simultaneously to how an event affects a player or object then the affected player or controller of the affected object chooses which one to apply first. Depending on exactly what the modified event is, the other effects may or may not be applicable anymore (and sometimes other effects will then become applicable).

In your example you decide whether to apply Gisela's prevention effect or Palm's prevention effect first to the damage your opponent is dealing with you. If you apply Gisela's effect first then 5 of the 10 damage is prevented before being completely prevented by Palm. If you apply Palm first then all 10 damage is prevented and there's nothing for Gisela's effect to be applied to. When Palm deals damage back to your opponent (either 5 or 10, depending on your decisions above), Gisela's damage-doubling ability will be applied.

Oops, disregard my post. Lol. I read it backwards that the opponent had Gisela.

So if I control both Deflecting Palm and Gisela, Blade of Goldnight, the damage is not applied until I'm hit, so I would prevent 10 damage, then it would be reapplied to an opponent for 20 damage, correct?

Essentially, yes.
