Dark depths and wasteland interaction

Asked by Husky 7 years ago

So I was playing a game with a friend and a particular interaction came up and I wasn't for sure if it was correct so I thought I might ask. I was playing Lands and I had a Dark Depths and Thespian's Stage out and I activated the stage to make it a copy of dark depths. Meanwhile my opponent has an open Wasteland. My friend wanted to wait until the thespian stage had become a copy of dark depths and the first dark depths has been sacrificed to the legendary rule. He claims that he can wasteland the thespian stage in response to making the Marit Lage token so that the token can't be made. Is this true? I wasn't aware making the token goes on the stack.

First, the legend rule doesn't cause sacrifice. You put the extra permanent into its owner's graveyard.

Second, Dark Depths has a state trigger. As soon as the copy ability of Thespian's Stage resolves, the legend rule occurs and then the state trigger is put onto the stack. Your opponent can respond to it then.
