Casting with conundrum sphinx

Asked by Icbrgr 7 years ago

If i declare Conundrum Sphinx as my attacker and then name Voyage's End (and im correct) causing it to go into my hand; could i then cast Voyage's End targeting my opponents declared blocker?

Yes, with some fine print.

Conundrum Sphinx's ability triggers and resolves in the declare attackers step. You'll have Voyage's End in hand before the declare attackers step ends.

As a result, you can choose one of two (really, three) options:

1: You see a potential blocker that you'd rather not give your opponent the chance to declare. You cast Voyage's End during the declare attackers step, returning that creature to its owner's hand so that it can't be declared as a blocker. Your opponent can still declare a different blocker if able.

2: You move to the declare blockers step. Your opponent declares a blocker. After blockers are declared, you cast Voyage's End and return it to its owner's hand. Your creature is still blocked, though. Once blocked, an attacking creature remains blocked until the end of combat. Removing the blocker will not cause your attacker to become unblocked.

"Other"/3: You just don't cast Voyage's End.

hmmm interesting technicalities.... did not think Removing the blocker would not cause my attacker to become unblocked. figured that would be my window to slip a 4/4 through for damage... but i guess my only hope for that is with the first option... Thanks for the detailed answer!
