Can I cascade into Chalice of the Void?

Asked by bigphilt10 2 years ago

I run Bloodbraid Elf and Chalice of the Void. When I cascade into the Chalice, can I cast it? Is it automatically for zero?

Yes you can cast it, and X will be zero.

In every zone other than the stack, an X in a mana cost counts as zero. If it's on the stack as a spell, then X will have whatever value was chosen for it. However, if you're casting a spell "without paying its mana cost" or while paying any alternative cost that doesn't include X then you're only allowed to choose zero (unless the text of the spell defines what X has to be - Spoils of War is the only example I can think of).

Okay related question: If cards like Chalice of the Void and Walking Ballista have mana value of zero when they are in my library, does that mean that Urza's Saga can search for them when it reaches chapter 3? And would X again necessarily equal zero when they are put in play?

For Urza's Saga, no. Urza's Saga is unusual in that instead of caring about mana value like most things do, it searches for something with the specific mana cost of either or . It won't be able to get Chalice or Ballista, as they both have mana cost .
