Attempt to Soulfire a Waterveil

Asked by TMBRLZ 8 years ago

I'm afraid I already know the answer to this but the wonderful world of Magic is full of surprises so I'm asking for fourth opinions.

Soulfire Grand Master's activated ability triggering off of Part the Waterveil.

The exile part is part of Waterveil's effect as it resolves so I'm assuming I'm right in saying it would go immediately to exile and be unable to be brought back to my hand by Soulfire's delayed trigger replacement effect.

However what makes me question the other side of this is Soulfire's wording of "as it resolves."

So the question is: Does it work? Can I take infinite turns in Standard for a wonderful 6UUUU mana?

Scratch that. I'm good at this game and read the same thing for Temporal Trespass

Sorry to waste time.

For those looking for clarification, Soulfire Grand Master's replacement effect only kicks in if the card would be put into your graveyard as it resolves. Because Part the Waterveil exiles itself as it resolves, it doesn't go to the graveyard as it resolves and the replacement effect from Soulfire Grand Master's ability never applies.

Note also that replacement effects are not triggers. There's no such thing as a "delayed trigger replacement effect." The activated ability creates a replacement effect that simply applies the next time the relevant event would occur (if it does occur).

But Soulfire Grand Master says "the next time you cast an instant or sorcery..."

Based on my knowledge of the stack I would guess the following: Soulfire's activated ability creates a delayed trigger. Upon successfully casting a spell that delayed trigger would go off and be put on the stack, her trigger would resolve, then the spell would resolve. Then as Part the Waterveil resolves the replacement effect would kick in, not using the stack, and the spell would be moved to the exile zone instead of the graveyard zone immediately.

Maybe I wasn't being clear by describing the two effects in the same string of words but I'm fairly positive that her activated ability would have to trigger off the stack once a spell is cast that would meet it's requirements.

Soulfire Grand Master does not create a delayed triggered ability. The phrase "The next time you cast an instant or sorcery spell from your hand this turn" only defines what the replacement effect will apply to. Note the lack of "when," "whenever," or "at," any of which would indicate a triggered ability.
