Archetype of Endurance with Archetype of Endurance...

Asked by UpperDeckerTaco 9 years ago

So I was in a heated EDH game and my buddy pulled out an Archetype of Endurance . I thought, "well damn, my Clever Impersonator won't work on his creatures or not of my burn spells either". Then I pulled a Glaring Spotlight from top deck, and had a Clever Impersonator and copied his Archetype of Endurance . Now, I am a little iffy on how the "First In, Last Out" works (if this fits that circumstance). But how would those two cards interact on opposite sides of the board...

The "First in, last out" philosophy is usually brought up with the Stack. It doesn't apply in this situation.

Here you have multiple objects saying "Creatures have hexproof" and "Creatures can't have hexproof". One of Magic's golden rules is "Can't beats Can".

  • 101.2. When a rule or effect allows or directs something to happen, and another effect states that it cant happen, the cant effect takes precedence

So with 2 different players having Archetype of Endurance , they cancel out each other, so no creatures have Hexproof.

The Glaring Spotlight doesn't really do anything on this board. The no creatures will have hexproof, so its static ability won't do anything. It's activated abitily also won't do anything, as the hexproof will be nullified by the opposing Archetype.

First, hexproof doesn't affect Clever Impersonator . Nowhere in Clever Impersonator 's text does the card say "target."

Second, there's no first in last out here. That's an explanation of stack mechanics. In this case, we have multiple static abilities trying to apply effects. The end result is that all creatures lose hexproof and can't gain hexproof, as the cards say.

(The activated ability of Glaring Spotlight will still make your creatures unblockable of course.)

Why is everyone assuming this is about losing hexproof? [Glaring Spotlight] doesn't remove Hexproof it just allows you to ignore it.Or am I reading wrong?

Reread Archetype of Endurance 's second static ability, it makes all opposing players' creatures lose hexproof. That's what we were referring to.
