3 questions about planeswalkers

Asked by jbnet211 10 years ago

  1. can planeswalkers block and attack?

  2. this more of a confirmation for me, they do not suffer from summoning sickness right?

  3. Chandra, Pyromancer 0 ability means I don't have to pay the mana cost to play the exiled card?

  1. No, they cannot block or attack. They can be dealt damage by attacking creatures that aren't blocked, if your opponent chooses to redirect the damage. The only exceptions are walkers who have abilities that turn them into creatures, like Gideon, Champion of Justice .

  2. Planeswalkers are unaffected by summoning sickness. Again, the exception is something like Gideon, Champion of Justice . If he becomes a creature, he will suffer from summoning sickness if he hasn't been on the field since before your last upkeep.

  3. Chandra, Pyromaster 's ability does still require you to pay any cost of the exiled card.

For 1 and 2, they are not creatures. They do not attack/block and do not have summoning sickness.

  1. Chandra, Pyromaster 's second ability does not specify that you don't have to pay the mana cost. If that were the case, it would state it outright, so you may choose to play the exiled card or not but you would still have to pay it's cost(s).

  1. No. Only creatures can attack and block.

  2. They do not. Only creatures suffer from summoning sickness.

  3. Chandra, Pyromaster (remember to link it in your question) says: "You may play it this turn." If you could cast it without playing its mana cost, it would say: "You may play it without paying its mana cost this turn." Therefore, you can't.

Something to point out in kmcree's answer is that combat damage is not redirected. Your opponent must declare which creatures are attacking the walker and which are attacking you. The only time damage can be redirected is when noncombat damage (say from Lightning Bolt ) is being dealt to the controller of the walker.
