State of Standard

Standard forum

We're nearing the end of the standard season; so how does everyone think about the current state.

My take: It's a good format but still dominated by one deck (Energy), and one of my fellow players lamented that WotC should've added a feature in Revolt that gave players a chance to leech energy away from opponents. I feel that was a missed opportunity but alas, other than that it's a good format.

Let's see what Rivals bring next season

So rivals kicks out kaladesh block?

I am overall very satisfied with this standard season. Energy is a very good mechanic and there are numerous other decks ready to take its spot.

Gogo gadget merfolk!

I think that Standard is fine for the highly competitive, and kinda bad for people (like me) who just want to build something reasonably competitive for FNM.

Energy is too prevalent, but it kind of has to be. As a non-mana resource, it was either going to be so underwhelming that nobody plays it, or so good that everyone plays it. FNM at my LGS is a chorus of "land, attune" at the start of each round... and we've got some folks trying different stuff (like myself and a few others are playing tokens, I saw a God-Pharaohs Gift deck running around, but it was primarily energy and some Ramunap Red).

I am hopeful that RIX will add enough support to make some of the tribes playable. I sank some money into Pirates at Ixalan launch thinking they'd be good and they weren't - really hope RIX gives me some tools to rebuild that deck and not feel like I flushed a bunch of $$ down the toilet on draft chaff.

Anyway, I wouldn't let my comments deter anyone thoroughly enjoying Standard at the moment, but I find it quite stale and unimaginative.

Land attune is music to my ears I run a mean version of RDW that tends to just roll over energy and token decks like fire in space. There is several niche decks atm so it's not to convoluted with energy at my lgs but when it is I'm a very happy camper.

I play an abzan counters deck that uses the AKH "undercosted creatures with counters" idea with Tocatli Honor Guard and Solemnity. It's so cute to see them try and manage a truly limited resource
