Shambling goblin vs Festering mummy

Hi there,

I am wondering which out of Shambling Goblin or Festering Mummy is the better card?

On the surface they appear to do relatively the same thing, but the mummy has more permanence to its death trigger.

I ask because I never seem to see the mummy being run in any decks and wondered why that is.

I actually use these cards. But I try to use every card, lol. I personally prefer Festering Mummy for the exact reason you said.

These cards are not super "paupular" though, from what I've noticed, which is probably why you don't see them very often. They are best in decks where you can reliably sacrifice them, but also serve as decent chumps.

Festering Mummy interacts favorably with Butcher Ghoul, so that's a plus too.

I play monoblack pauper zombies, I run both these cards. I run 4 Mummy and 2 Goblin. Here is why:

  1. Permanence: Mummy's -1/-1 counter stays on the target until the counter is removed or the creature leaves the battlefield, Goblin's -1/-1 only lasts until end of turn.
  2. Flexibility: This one is less obvious but really helpful in pauper zombie decks. Mummy can target your own creatures, Goblin can't. That is big for a couple reasons. Most pauper zombie decks have a lot of graveyard retrieval so you can afford to loose creatures. Sultai Emissary is a 1/1 that wants to die and Mummy can get that done. Then there is a second synergy most people don't use, Vengeful Dead. Vengeful Dead does 1 damage every time a zombie dies, festering mummy can make it awesome. Yesterday on mtgo I sacked a Festering Mummy to Gnawing Zombie during my post combat main, Gnawing gives me 1 life and does 1 to my opponent, Vengeful Dead does 1 to my opponent for a zombie dying, I use the dead Festering to give -1/-1 to another Festering I had, it dies, Vengeful pings for 1 again, the second Festering gives my Sultai Emissary -1/-1, it dies and becomes a 2/2 , and Vengeful pings for 1 again. In that single post-combat main, I paid 2 mana and three 1/1s I can easily resurrect to gain 1 life, do 4 damage to my opponent, and gain a 2/2 morph. That is only possible because Mummy can target my own creatures.

If I could, I'd run 6 Festering Mummy and 0 Shambling Goblin.
