Modern Metagame State Tournament

I will be attending the States tournament this month with a buddy of mine, and although we play modern, we haven't really been on the competitive scene very much. That said, we don't have a whole lot to expect. I definately expect some B/G attrition, Twin, Affinity, and Tron/Shift/Infect/Naya/Grixis (and other mtggoldfish meta lists) and what have you as far as possible decks. But should I over prepare for a specific deck(s), or have some generic SB options for rogue decks or what? Any and all help will be appreciated.

Also, it may help to note that I will be bringing Affinity to the tournament (since it's pretty straight forward) and my buddy is bringing a rogue control variant of his own. Thanks in advance!

You better be ready for Grixis, Jund, Abzan, Tron and UWx. Those are the most played decks in Modern and you will see a ton of them.

Also I understand others might be posting seemingly similar threads, but mine is more along the lines of preparation of previously decided decks, not trying to decide what deck to bring. Thanks

DrFunk27 Thank you! I'm definitely preparing for the attrition matchup. But I have to prepare a bit more for Tron, since I'm a little less familiar with that matchup

Pro tip: learn how to play your deck. If you think Affinity is a straightforward deck, you're probably not going to do very well unless you've been playing the deck for years and know all the ins and outs. Because you're asking this question, I'll just assume that this is not the case.

Here, read this.

Prepare for the mirror match. Affinity has been very prominent of late, so pack some Ancient Grudge to help down your opponents' robots.

ThatJunkMage- Really appreciate the advice, and will take the remaining week and a half to familiarize myself with it even more, but have been working with it for a couple of months now. I've been reading primers (including the one you provided), watching Open/Grand Prix/Pro Tour matches piloting the archetype against popular lists as well, and have been testing the list myself. Most of my preparation until the tourney will consist primarily of testing, which assumes I know the meta to expect, hence the thread. Thank you!

rothgar13- Will do, right now I have 2 ancient grudges and a single wear/tear. Might consider 3 grudges, but definitely will have at least two since most lists have that

Since it's not a GP or other huge level tournament with lots of pros, assume you're going to play a decent amount of Zoo(all flavors) along with some tier 2 decks. The last time I went to a states tournament I played 1 tier 1 deck(affinity go figure) and played a super diverse field. While all the aforementioned decks are significant players, if there are more than 50 players or so you can't really predict what you are going to play.

Like what was already mentioned: faniliarity with your own deck and how to sideboard will pay off WAY more than predicting the metagame. A skilled player with a subpar deck will often do better than someone who doesn't know their way around the top deck at a tournament. Just get your reps in and make sure your sideboard is tight and you'll do fine.

Don't forget, Burn is also a big deck right now, like usual. Also prepare to see some Delver and Merfolk.

Just be prepared for a variety of decks, and play your own deck to death. Play on cockatrice. Play on untap. Play at your LGS. Play at your friends house.

Affinity is actually a very intricate deck that can do some amazing things if you really learn the ins and outs. Respect the meta.

in my opinion, it is a great site with solid statistics. you will most likely find Twin, Affinity, Tron, and then whatever 1% meta stuff floating. I ran into 3 Spirit Token decks. It is an up and coming thing, if more than 1 person is trying it. So it is always good to have something similar to Detention Sphere or Maelstrom Pulse. you get the idea...SAME NAME AS.

If you don't mind me asking, could I see your list??? Shoot me a message!! Peace
