I have often heard players of this game speak of how powerful the dredge mechanic is, but, since I have never played with or against a deck that uses it, I do not understand why it is so powerful. Would someone here be able to explain exactly how dredge is so powerful?

Instead of drawing, cards enter the graveyard. From there, ability trigger. These abilities trigger other abilities. Now you have 15 power on turn 2 and you untap. Dredge in a nutshell.Check out this articel for details: https://www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/deck-evolutions-modern-dredge

Dredge lets some decks essentially "draw" 5-6 cards per every draw.

Certain decks can use cards in the graveyard as a resource. And, as EpicFreddi already mentioned, there are lot of cards in Magic that have abilities that trigger in the graveyard. The Dredge archetype has helped transform Modern into a turn 3 format.

The key factor in understanding Dredge is that it basically trades its hand with its graveyard.

Because it plays things out of its graveyard for a reduced cost or no cost at all, basically every card in the graveyard is the same as having a card in your hand if you were playing another deck. Conversely, it has trouble casting things from its hand. Cards in Dredge's hand are basically dead cards, the same way the graveyard normally functions in other decks.

This means Dredge gains serious advantages over other decks because discarding cards is normally considered a disadvantage in MtG. Cards are designed to have this be part of a cost. But since Dredge wants cards in its graveyard, these costs are now advantages.

A card like Breakthrough, for example, would be reasonably balanced in a regular Standard format. In a format with Dredge? It's basically draw 4 cards for , making it better than Ancestral Recall.

Dredge is very non-interactive before its opponent can sideboard. Whereas they'd normally enjoy making their opponent discard or mill cards, this is now a major liability since Dredge's graveyard is its hand.
