I understand that this isn't a rules question but I really want an answer to it. I heard someone say that WotC used to not release a list of which cards were in a set. I am wondering why this is the case. Thanks

I don't really know what you mean, but do you mean the cards exclusive to planeswalker packs?

That's true. Part of the original concept for the trading card game was to put more emphasis on mystery and discovery. No setlists were published, and there was no way to distinguish rarity just by looking at the card (the fact that pack collation was a lot worse in the early days made rarity even more mysterious). You might sit down for a game with someone and end up seeing some cards you hadn't even heard about, much less seen before, and the idea was that it would add excitement to the game.

In the end, the game was so popular that the average player bought tons more cards than the designers ever imagined (which is a good problem to have, I guess), and over the years it became clear that fans were hungry for as much information about the game as they could get. WotC eventually started publishing lists of cards, made rarity more clear, and started officially publishing top decklists from big tournaments (which they also used to not do in order to play up the mystery/excitement).

True, there used to be no preview of cards before a prerelease. Which gave an element of surprise to the events. But this slowed the games down at pre releases due to having to read each card each player played.

It would be fun if they did a suppl. set without setlist.

smackjack Iconic Masters didn't have a spoiler season, and we weren't given any info on it until it's "prerelease" at Hascon. So much so that I forgot it was even coming out lol.

I remember back in '93 my ex-gf cast a Mox Ruby that she had secretly traded for and the whole room was like "Woah!"....first time we ever saw a Mox!

Not printing a list of cards from a set wouldn't work now with the internet, anyway, as people would post the sets as soon as packs were cracked.
