Pokemon energy cards as lands

General forum

Okay, so recently there's been a few people at my game shop using old Pokemon energy cards as the land card for their decks. For people who are familiar with Pokemon, they've been using normal energy as plain, water as islands, dark as black, fire as mountains and grass type as green. Now, I loved Pokemon when I was 7 or 8 and as kind of a throwback to that, I wanted to hop on the bandwagon and foil out my mana base with Pokemon energy cards. It sounds weird, but it actually ends up looking really cool. The issue is- I have no idea where on earth to buy energy cards. Could someone direct me to where I could buy foil energy cards from Pokemon?

Thank you!

PS- I dont know if this is a forum question or topic, but I had no idea where else to put this, I apologize if it's misplaced, I know admins put a lot of work into keeping things in the right forums. If this is getting taken down, please just let me know.

Entirely Haraam. You can make up the back of cards through some sleeves.

Not if you don't use crappy sleeves.

I've actually done the reverse. I was getting into pokemon with some friends and was missing energies so I used basic lands as my pokemon energies.

Even dragonshields sometime have that issue. Particularly the teal ones.

I would call a judge on this. Using PKMN cards as tokens is one thing. Using them in a main deck, even as basic lands, is another. I don't want to be a stick in the mud but I don't consider this appropriate even for FNM.

For casual play, though, I'm sure it's fine.

The problem isn't the back of the cards it's the SIZE of the cards.

Theoretically you might be able to feel when a card is smaller than your average MtG card, which might be a problem for some people.

If not, it sounds like a cool idea!

Magic and pokemon cards are the exact same size. Pokemon was originally made by WOTC.

NoPantsParade- Thanks! I'll check it out!

JakeHarlow- honestly, the first person who started doing this was our game store owner at FNM one day. people just thought it was really cool and I loved pokemon as a kid. Like xlaleclx said, the cards are the same size, so it's hard to 'know' when one is coming up, (Although if they were drastically different sizes, I would be inclined to agree with you) especially when using good quality sleeves like dragon sheilds or KMCs where you can't even see the backs. I could understand with crappy ultra pro sleeves though. I know that some colors of dragon shields are a little more translucent, in which case it's not entirely okay to do so, but when you can't even see the back of the card through the sleeve, why call someone on it? I wouldn't do it anywhere other than an FNM or pre release, nor do I think anyone would. FNM isn't where people go to be super serious or competitively, that's where people go just to have fun and play magic. There's literally no point in cheating at an FNM anyways because that would only get you banned and there's literally no benefit to it other than 'maybe' winning a booster pack depending on what your game store does. I'm not saying it's not okay to call someone on it if you have a problem with it, I'm just trying to express my point of view on the matter. I apologize if I've come across strongly or in any way rude.

@ Nixin72:

You have not been rude at all, there's no need for you to apologize. I was simply expressing doubt about the practice of using PKMN energies as lands because of the potential for some players to abuse them. For instance, if you were using heavily opaque sleeves like KMC Hyper-Mats, I wouldn't bat at eye at your land-energies. But then other players might do the same but with less opaque sleeves, causing awkward issues. There might be folks who would refuse to re-sleeve if they knew that other people (using proper sleeves) had been previously allowed to use energies as lands.

I think it's fine to do play PKMN energies as lands, but there need to be clear rules about doing so. The opportunities for abuse at FNM (and believe me, there are a few players who will do almost anything to cheat) simply give me pause about it, that's all. I think it is a neat idea though.

Okay, that clarifies things. Your previous statement had a very absolute tone about it implying under no circumstance should people be allowed this at any level of play above kitchen table magic. Yea no, there's very obvious ways that people can abuse this idea, such as playing with translucent or transparent sleeves, or if Pokemon cards were different sizes. I agree that there should be very definite rules set in place when using them, but it is a cool idea that gives an interesting effect and being one of the people who would not use this as a way to cheat or abuse the system, I think id like to try it out.

But I was checking the price of foil energy cards and they're way more expensive Than I was expecting... Like, 2-3$ for one. That's as much as the popular Zendikar full arts- I guess foils in Pokemon are just way less common. Or out of print or something, I dont know anything about it outside the video games.

Hmmm. Still, it would look pimp. :)

Yeah I didn't mean for my initial comment to sound like an ultimatum. Going back and reading it, it certainly did sound like an absolute. All I actually meant by "calling a judge" was that you'd need to verify with your tourney organizer that your sleeves and such were kosher, etc. I'm always on the lookout for people who try to cheat at the game, because I've seen folks get away with nonsense too many times. I think the energy cards are fine though as long as your sleeves are appropriate and your judge okays them.
