Hi, I decided to make a commander deck, me and my friends were talking about it for a while and we though it was a great idea to play commander, although my deck has a couple expensive cards I aimed to build it on a budget, but before i ship the cards in I was hoping to get some feedbakc on it, if rampwise is good and whatnot, what would u add or take out of my current list.

jodah

Hey, I'll take a look at your deck and give some advice.

The most important thing to focus on when building a budget five color Jodah deck is color fixing. Making sure you can make all five colors of mana to cast spells with Jodah. Usually you get enough color fixing from the manabase with dual lands. On a budget you can get some from lands, but the lands you can afford to play are not good enough by themselves for color fixing therefore want fixing from many other nonland sources.

For ramp with five colors get ramp from different sources not all from one source. Beginning Commander deck builders tend to lean on land ramp spells such as Cultivate for ramp. These are fine, but you want to include other sources of ramp not just land ramp. Mana rocks (artifacts that tap to make mana) and mana dorks (little creatures who tap to make mana) are other sources to consider. For five colors I recommend 13, 0-3 CMC nonland varying sources, that can ramp and/or color fix.

Hey. A few things that popped to me :

  • Your average CMC (5.91) is way too high. I get that you wanna play all the cool powerful cards but basically your mana curve should be inverted, with a CMC peak at around 3 intead of 7. Jodah allows you to play them for cheaper but what if you can't have him in play? What's gonna happen is 1. you won't be able to cast your spells and 2. IF you get to cast your 7 mana spells, it's only gonna be 1 per turn, meaning you'll sit there with a full hand of powerful cards you can't use optimally while your opponents may be flooding the board with threats.

  • Your mana base needs to be improved. You can't really run a 5-c deck with only 35 lands composed of 7 copies of each basic. I mean you can, but you're not going to have a good time because you'll be mana screwed pretty often. I'm not saying you absolutely need shocklands, fetches or duals but you at least need checklands or Gates/Life-Gain Duals to help fix your production of colors, especially if you intend yo use Jodah a lot.

  • As or the cards choice, I don't really have comments. It's up to each and every player to play what he/she wants. I fully advocate building casual decks for commanders and it seems that's your approach too so... yeah, naisu!
