Creature Dedication Challenge!!

Challenges and Articles forum

Alright. I am new at this, so if you think this would be boring, let me know. But I think it will be fun. Let me start by saying this, I love dedicated theme decks. They make magic fun, and keep our creative minds working in overdrive. So here is the challenge. I want dedication. I'm talking about a 60 card deck with two kinds of permenants...lands and creatures. And to make this a bit harder, every single creature in your deck had to share a type. Be it goblins, elves, slivers, or anything else, I want you to show your pride. I plan to choose the top 8 decks and put them all together in a single elimination bracket of best of 3 deliciousness. And yes... that's the description I chose to use. :p I hope I get 8 submissions... haha, if not... awkward. Here is how it works.

The Rules

60 card decks

No Instants, Sorceries, or Enchantments.

Single type creature spells only.

Legacy rules apply as far as the ban list is concerned. Other than that, you have free reign.

Good luck! I will take submissions for the next 24 hours,

@peterlravn - No instants, haha. You can only use creatures.

"Single type creature spells only."

I just noticed that, but it is really absurd. 90% of creatures are double typed at least. If going by that definition, it is impossible to make a deck.

I merely meant they all had to share a creature type, not all types. So for example vampire warrior and vampire rogue can be in the same deck because they are both vampires.

July 18, 2014 10:39 a.m.

Scytec says... #9

To clarify further, while vampire rogue and vampire warrior in the same deck is fine, you could not add a human warrior to the same deck. Every card in the deck needs to share a type across the spectrum. Does that clarify a little bit Boza? I'm really bad at explaining myself. Haha

This may be way too slow for the format, but I wanted to try out an Angel deck, so here it is!

By the way, are we using sideboards? It was fun to try to make one up that followed the same rules as the rest of the deck.

Not in this particular challenge. If I enjoy it then perhaps in the future. :)

July 18, 2014 5:28 p.m.

It's not eligible by virtue of not constraining itself to one tribe, but 60 Creatures Dot Deck goes forth in its own way by saying "psh, lands? Who needs those?"

To be fair, Since there are 5 decks, I am going to sit this out so that we have an even bracket.

Match 1 goes to W like Winner by 241543903 with a win-loss ration of 2-1. These were three close matches and it really came down to lifelink, both decks had it, but NorthernRaven's kithkins just couldn't keep up with 241543903's Transcendent Master .

July 21, 2014 12:13 p.m.

The_Raven says... #18

Oh damn! :D

I see, an 9/9 indestructible flying lifelinking moster is pretty hard for kithkins to kill! ;D

GG 241543903! :D (I guess that is what to say!)

Match 2 goes to Devoted to Rogues by Boza. Game count was 2-0. This deck is going to be hard to beat, both games were close though. Seraph of Dawn almost saved sewellius both games...but a last minute Stinkdrinker Bandit allowed Boza's creatures to swing for game both times.

241543903 says... #20

GG NorthernRaven. Nice deck you submitted BTW.

Also, Scytec, not trying to be pushy or something but next time try to set up some bracket or something. I was pretty suprised that it started and I went like "huh, what? oh, I won". I have small experience in those challenges (see gods of theros challenge), so it will help other to realize what's happening.

Match 3, and the Challenge goes to Boza's rogues. At the end of the day...the unblockable ability was just insanely beneficial for this matchup. Stinkdrinker Bandit was once again the star of both games, and really just outshone all the competition. +2/+1 may not seem like much benefit...but when coupled with 3 attacking unblockable creatures, the extra 6 life was just too much for 241543903's deck to handle. Congratulations Boza. You are the victor!!

That was actually what i was about to ask, I really enjoyed this, so I think I may start something up occasionally just for fun, what advice would y'all give to make this a better experience as competitors? Forming a bracket is fair, and something I should have done...but with so few entries, I wasn't sure it was necessary. Do you think I should give submissions longer than 24 hours? That seems a little short... What do y'all think?

July 21, 2014 1:04 p.m.

241543903 says... #23

I think that the deadline should be longer, at least 5 days IMHO. Lot of people enjoy turn by turn write-up, so that's also a good idea to make your challenge a better experience. If you will have REALLY great idea, compared to recent Spring Pauper Challenge or Guild Challenges by Dallie, try to talk with Epochaliptic from making articles about it, so you will have a lot of entries. If you want an "inspiration", look at my Gods of Theros challenge. Feel free to notify me when you will have idea for next challenge.

It was a really fun experience making a deck for the challenge :) True name nemesis and disciple of deceit being legacy staples by now sure pushed the rogues a bit further, but I am not complaining :) I love how in that deck, 99 percent of the total value is contained in the manabase, but even two colors in legacy will do that I guess.

Having a write-up will definitely improve the challenge. Like any good story, a good challenge needs to have a beggining (the challenge itself and deck creation), middle part (collecting and managing all the games) and an ending (delivering the results of the matches). 2 sentence synopsis of what happened feels like reading soccer results.

Focus on the flavor - give a speech on your opinion of each deck and how they are positioned before the battle; zero in on key card interactions - in tribal decks, there are loads of them; highlight alternative plays with the cards available. Like for example the fact that Frogtosser Banneret can make the Stinkdrinker Bandit cost just one black mana, since prowl is broken like that.

In short, generate some more hype and then, do not let the tempo slow down after the initial high note. You noted in a previous post that you were "bad at expressing yourself". Well, this is the perfect opportunity to improve that!

Scytec says... #25

Thank you Boza. What kind of challenges would you like to see in the future? Continue with a tribal theme or branch out a little and see what other kinds of trouble I can get into?

July 21, 2014 6:04 p.m.

sewellius says... #26

Thanks for putting on this challenge, Scytec. I had fun putting together the entry for it.

In terms of advice, I agree that having a bracket adds to the event, so users can try to anticipate the matches.

When writing up the matches themselves, having a turn-by-turn writeup also really adds to the fun for participants in the event. You can also opt for a detailed synopsis instead of a turn-by-turn transcript. Take a look at the "Ye Olde Deckbuilding Challenge" series by doinitwrong or the Pauper Challenge articles by zandl to see some examples of how to do a synopsis of the matches.

As to the type of challenge, I've always thought we could use more tribal-centric events. I know we've had a couple creature based challenges, but there are still plenty of variations you can try, or even repeat with new submissions.

Another thought; It's more work but, depending on the number of submissions, a round robin style event is probably the most interesting for an event (In My Opinion), simply because everyone gets to see how their entry does against every other entry.

It can be a bummer if your deck gets pitted in a really bad matchup, and in a round robin that will never be the only time your deck gets action.

I'll come back with suggestions for an event later when I have more time.

That is fair. I'll definitely think about it. And ya, I did enjoy doing this.
