Does Galactus Look too Ridiculous for a Live-Action Film?

The Blind Eternities forum

Now that Disney has acquired Fox, which includes the rights to make film adaptations of Fantastic Four, I imagine that they will eventually wish to include those characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which would include Galactus, but I wonder if Galactus's design will translate well into a live-action film.

Galactus is very badass, but I have always felt that his head looks too ridiculous for a live-action film, as if he is wearing an oversized stovepipe hat with two large prongs sticking out from either side, and his color scheme could use some work, as well. It is not an accident that M.O.D.O.K. has not yet appeared in any live-action film, nor that the costumes of the X-Men were changed from being ridiculously bright blue and yellow to sleek black, nor that the wings on both Thor and Captain America's helmets were removed or made smaller, as all of those elements would simply look ridiculous in a live-action film.

I am not saying that what Fox did to Galactus in Fantastic Four: Rise of Silver Surfer was good, but, if he is supposed to be a being as old as the universe itself, who is feared as a destroyer of worlds, I would rather that he did not appear to be corny by wearing an oversized hat.

What does everyone else say about this? Will Galactus's design translate well into a live-action film?

is there an mtg card for galactus?

sliverjedi09, no, there is not; why are you asking that?

its my subtle way of saying "we're on an MTG website, and this is not an MTG topic".

sliverjedi09, this forum does have a section for subjects that are not related to MtG, so I am using that section for that purpose.

its actually not for things not related to mtg. its for mtg related topics that don't fall within the other forum categories. you are clogging up space on the home page that could be used for actual mtg topics. if you want to discuss marvel, go to a marvel forum. people come to a magic site for magic. what you're doing is the equivalent of trying to buy groceries at Gamestop...because you're in the wrong place for what you are trying to do.

sliverjedi09 since you joined the site a little over 7 hours ago (welcome, by the way), it’s understandable how this might be confusing. The “blind eternities” forum is indeed for non-MTG discussions of any sort, or at the very least that’s how it’s been used for years. DemonDragonJ is well within their rights to post this, and they have been the author of numerous non-MTG discussions that bring a lot of fun and value to the community. If you have nothing constructive to add to the discussion, move on and find a discussion you like.

If GameStop sold groceries I’d consider going there more often... :)

Yeah I think if Galactus would probably need a redesign for how he would appear in film... even in the realm of comics I always thought he was a bit goofy looking.... but I could be I. The minority.

Wolverine is a great example of redesign from comics to film done well.... although I love the black/brown/yellow 80s costume and the yellow black and blue 90s look is very iconic for a generation I have my doubts that id be able to "take the movie seriously" if hugh jackman dressed up like that... I was happy with the films adaptation of costumes.

Suns_Champion: don't assume that the age of the account equates to the length of time the person has spent on this site. i assure you it doesn't. i'm not new here, and i'm not confused. the blind eternities is indeed not for non-mtg topics. just because "thats how its been used" does not mean that was its intention. i'm well aware of this guys frequent forum posts, and they add little "value". his frequent postings are exactly why i'm trying to get him to stop.

I agree he would need a redesign, so long as it wasn’t as bad as the redesign in the Fantastic Four, Silver Surfer movie.

Though, I’m not overly sure “planet eating super bad guy” is the kind of thing that would translate well to film in the first place. But I also thought a heavily-armed talking raccoon wouldn’t work well on film, so I’d be inclined to give Marvel the benefit of the doubt.

Caerwyn, Marvel did keep Loki's horned helmet in the Thor movies, but they made the horns smaller and more subtle, because, in the original comics, the horns were almost comically large and would never translate well into a lie-action film.

Personally I’m not a huge fan of Galactus as a character or villain. I like the small scale, really humanized villains, the best (and maybe only) example in the marvel films is Vulture. Enough of the world-ending biggest baddest bad guy.

I’d also like to see them build a coalition of villains. There are too many heroes right now.

Yes, he looks too ridiculous. But, I like to argue that less is more. As one to the Universal constants & elder Eternals in the Marvel universe, you can display his power in such diverse ways. You can have his forerunners play a much more major role (each ridiculously powerful in their own right).... You can do stuff like have eclipses, blackouts, & only vague glimpses of his true form.... I mean think of how the ant may visualize one of us when thinking of scaling. You might only see a shadow fall on your town, or a portion of a large object in the sky spanning into the distance (you would not see the entire picture). My opinon of the original Galactus on Earth idea is that it is a bit of corny relic-writing & cinematic can involve him but do it in a way more befitting of a vast and indifferent power. I would be more excited for a Dr. Doom overhaul.

Suns_Champion, yes, that definitely would be awesome, since I, also would appreciate that balance. In the DC Cinematic Universe, it seemed that Lex Luthor was assembling a team of supervillains, but I do hope that DC has not forgotten that plot line.

I don’t think the DCEU really cares about any of their plotlines. Having made.... 0? Good movies, they seem perfectly happy to reboot themselves with each passing film.

Going back to Marvel, Dr. Doom is a great bad guy, and could make for the wonderful head of some sort of evil organisation. That kind of thing can be a bit hard to pull off - we want our capstone bad guy to be a real threat to our heroes, and an anthology of people they already defeated isn’t all that intimidating. But with Doom and Magnito back in the fold, there’s at least some strong potential for the MCU to pull it off.

Doom is amazing when done right. Humanity at its worst, with a mind like Tony Stark's, similar resources, & also a little bit of Dr. Strange to him as well. The only reason he usually fails is that; unlike Strange or Iron Man, he doesn't put the same kind of work & understanding into developing the power he has. He always steals some massive power & with that comes that incomplete understanding. Phenomenal Cosmic Power!!.... Itty Bitty Living space ;)

Caerwyn, I believe that Aquaman, Shazam, and Wonder Woman were all excellent films.

Also, I really hope that, if Magneto does appear in the MCU, he is an anti-hero at worst, or even a full hero, because I do not want him to be a villain. While I do like villains who are fully and irredeemably evil, Magneto is a very complex character with whom the audience can relate and sympathize, and, despite the flaws of the various X-Men films, both Ian McKellen and Michael Fassbender did amazing jobs in their portrayal of his character.

since i have only seen the image of galactus in the lego marvel video game i might not be the best to answer but my idea of what the actuall size of galactus is whould be bigger than a planet so i dont think the animation marvel has could not make him be big enough so that you can actually believe he eats planets and not make him be to oversized so that it is actually believable he is able to be a villain that dosent just destroy everything and make the movie like 1 hour

May 26, 2020 2:10 p.m.

also i feel like galactus is just to powerful for the avengers especially considering thanos was a threat

May 27, 2020 9:46 a.m.

marvel could remaster galactus to be a god that is thanos sized but destroys planets and feeds off the ruins
