Spell Queller : Your Questions Answered! —June 19, 2018

I love Spell Queller. It is a great card. A 2/3 Flyer with Flash for 3 mana is not bad by itself. It can act as a blocker and a decent threat. But what makes it great is its abilities.

Spell Queller has the unique ability to EXILE a spell on the stack that is cc 4 or less. This gets around cards like Supreme Verdict and Abrupt Decay that say cannot be countered! The fact that this effect is on a body means we can do some interesting tricks with Eldrazi Displacer.

Spell Queller has a major downside in that if it leaves the field the owner of the exiled card gets to cast it for free at instant speed

Spell Queller and Eldrazi Displacer Shenanigans Eldrazi Displacer can exile and return any creature (other than itself) at instant speed for the cost of 1 colorless and 2 generic mana. This means we can bounce Spell Queller and cause the release of the spell and capture of a spell at once, The capture trigger cannot catch the spell being released as the cast trigger causes the spell to end at the top of the stack with the capture below it. However due to the unique wording on the card, if you can capture a spell with the trigger on the stack and bounce Spell Queller you can permanently exile a spell as long as there is another spell to absorb. It works as follows.

Step 1: Have Spell Queller on field and an opponent's spell on stack. Step 2: Blink Spell Queller through some sort of effect (eldarzi displacer in our case). Step 3: Spell Queller has two abilities go on stack that you get to choose order, a capture effect and release effect. Stack it so the spell gets released before the capture occurs. Step 4: Opponents original spell that was captured is now on the stack above the blinked capture effect (which means it cant be targeted by that effect) so you target the Supreme Verdict Step 5: Blink the Spell Queller again. The release trigger happens and a new capture trigger happens. You can now capture the origional spell that was under the Spell Queller. The release trigger happens for the Supreme Verdict capture and then the capture trigger happens permanently exiling the Supreme Verdict
