Story

We wanted to keep the flavor of what was noted in the brainstorm, without being too terribly specific, and leaving the rest of the overall storyline intact (for the two expansion sets later). Everyone was basically on the same page with the spiritual/wartorn/unified thing with some awesome details and backstory. Non of this is going to be lost (the Design Team is a bunch of hoarders), but we decided to keep it a bit simple and somewhat generic for now.

Chavest is scrublands that lead to a treacherous volcanic range. The general tone for the shard is nihilistic and dark. Chavest is a land united under an iron rule, after a series of bitter conflicts and adjustments.

Creature Types

According to the voting the main creature types of Chavest are :

1) demons - bound to Chavest by an unknown being Demons are generally humanoid but with massively muscular bodies, twisted, horned faces, clawed limbs, and in many cases leathery wings, demons embody the suffering and evil desires of ordinary races.

2) angels - also bound to Chavest by an unknown being, Angels have an extremely strong sense of justice and often devote their lives - and their deaths - to its cause, whatever it may be.

3) humans - Tough minded, hearty and adaptable.

4) imps - imps are barely-sentient, feral pests.

5) viashino - The Viashino are intelligent humanoids with lean, muscular builds. These Lizard-Folk are descended from dragons. Quick, agile, and vicious when required.

6) pheonix - rare and special, the pheonix embodies the driving force of the current, all encompassing Chavest faith, Redemption through destruction.

Note : We are allowing creatures to be Angels and Demons at the same time.

Subtypes include: knight, cleric, judge, barbarian/berserker, rogue.

To Recap : Main Types : demons, angels, humans, imps, viashino, phoenix. Subtypes : knight, cleric, judge, barbarian/berserker, rogue

Themes/Mechanics

Cleave

The decided on this form of Cleave presented during the brainstorm: Cleave X (whenever this creature deals combat damage to a creature it deals X damage to that creatures controller.)

All members of the design team agreed that this was more balanced than the previous version and this version had community support during the brainstorm.

Others

The mechanics of course include the evergreen keywords (deathtouch, defender, double strike, enchant, equip, first strike, flash, flying, haste, indestructible, intimidate, landwalk, lifelink, protection, reach, regenerate, shroud, trample, and vigilance), and cleave in the form of "cleave X" (whenever this creature deals combat damage to a creature it deals X damage to that creatures controller.)

The general themes according to the voting are land destruction, sweepers, burn, creature removal, Life Gain/Drain, anti-land, and sacrifice.

Chavest's Mythic Rare Challenge

The leader of Chavest is a RBW Mythic Rare Legendary Creature. For Chavest's first card creation challenge, you will be creating this Leader. These are the guidelines you must follow:

1) The card must be a RBW mythic rare.

2) The card must be Legendary Creature card.

3) If the card has any mana symbols on it, they can only be Chavest's colors (black, red, white).

4) Other than Cleave, the only keywords that may appear on the card must be evergreen (deathtouch, defender, double strike, enchant, equip, first strike, flash, flying, haste, indestructible, intimidate, landwalk, lifelink, protection, reach, regenerate, shroud, trample, and vigilance).

5) Each person may submit a maximum of four entries total.

6) We will be judging based on the following criteria: a) Effectiveness (Does the card actually work mechanics-wise?) b) Set Cohesion (Does the card fit the flavor for the description of the leader?) c) Balance (Is the card too overpowered or underpowered both in general and for its rarity?) d) Creativity (Does the card seem fun or is it a clever design?)

The deadline for entries is Tuesday, March 8th, 2011 at 11:59 p.m.

It said the deadline for the brainstorm was Sunday, March 6th. What happened???

March 3, 2011 9:40 p.m.

squire1 says... #2

Oops! damn fine point vic. That was a typo. We meant to give about a week for brainstorm as usual. It was to end this past Sunday. So that we could meet Wed. (yesterday). Sorry for the confusion everyone.

But that aside, can't wait to see the entries.

vic says... #3

Okay, I see that creatures are allowed to be angel and demon at the same time. Good. But what about human/demon and human/angel? This was a big discussion point, and I hope it will be addressed(and I hope the answer is "yes"), because we are about to submit card entries. I will probably want to draw from those combos, and so I would like to know if they are allowed, before I use them in entries.

MagnorCriol says... #4

I was caught off guard by that too, I hadn't posted the stuff I'd been thinking of yet. It's all good though, most of the stuff I was thinking of was pretty similar to what was chosen anyhow.

I'm looking forward to this challenge. Out of curiosity, why are we doing a creature instead of a planeswalker?

Also - we still have one shard left after this, correct? GWB?

I count 4 besides me, and it could very well have gone on to be more, as it was a later topic that was starting to develop. Then, it ended earlier than we thought. I did have the community in mind with that post. Even if it only effects 5 card makers, that's a significant % here, so I thought it might matter. Just looking for a quick point of clarification about it, that's all. Feel free to email me about it, if you want to talk more. I wanna save the space for card entries.

Something occurred to me while drafting up some creatures.

If we make this legendary creature a phoenix, and give it a enters-the-graveyard or enters-the-battlefield trigger like lots of phoenixes have (Magma Phoenix ), that could set the stage for some serious "legend rule" abuse. Depending on the ability, of course, but a GY / ETB trigger on a mythic rare-level creature is probably something worth abusing

Is this okay, or a problem we need to address?

March 5, 2011 7:11 p.m.

MagnorCriol says... #38

Gah, I'm sorry, forgot the other question I had.

We're not counting Cleave X as combat damage, correct? So if I have a creature with Cleave 1 and "When this creature deals combat damage to a player, you may draw a card," the Ophidian effect would not trigger?

March 5, 2011 7:15 p.m.

correct. the way that cleave currently reads it is not combat damage and hence would not trigger in the example you gave.

  1. Art has not really been discussed yet
  2. What do you want more information on? If it is the community set I would say read the older articles. As for distribute, I don't know what you mean.

Inchoate Diety

2WWBR

Legendary Creature Angel

When Inchoate Diety enters the battlefield, each player sacrifices all creatures he or she controls other than Inchoate Diety.

Each time a player sacrifices a creature, its controller loses 3 life and you gain 3 life.

4/6

~~~~~
"Inchoate" means not fully-formed, and is generally awesome. Love the word. I started imagining a being just discovering its power perhaps a real diety, perhaps not, drawing followers claiming him/her as Chav? I dont know, thatd be a story point, thus up to you. But I think this has the feel of a being that demands worship with all the finesse of a creature growing into its power (which is to say, not much).
At first I worried about it lacking red flavor, but after some reasearch I realized Red actually has a decent history of sacrifice effects. So the white portion is the angel and proto-diety, the black/red flavor is the sacrifice and life drain.
Not much to say about him. I sorta took the idea of Soul Warden and twisted it around. I think this variation on protection "troll-protection," if you will is interesting, and Im surprised it hasnt been done before.
When Iphael enters the battlefield, you gain 3 life for each white mana spent to cast it, it deals 2 damage to each other creature for each red mana spent to cast it, and target opponent loses 1 life and you gain 1 life for each black mana spent to cast it.
At the beginning of your upkeep, return Iphael from the graveyard to your hand.
6 mana to cast
5 power
4 toughness
3 life gained
2 damage dealt
1 life drained
Customizable creature. Do you need life, a board wipe, or to drain your opponent? Originally I had him as costing a colorless 6, manually listing that his colors were WBR with the same "WBR only" restriction on him, but that just didnt feel right. Do you think it could work? It allows for interesting opportunities.
The sequential set of numbers was mostly coincidental, actually, as I was balancing him out. I made a couple tweaks for it to fit but I thought it was kinda cool it worked out like that. Interesting as it is, it's completely understandable if they should be tweaked for balance reasons.
Arz, Demon of War
3WBBRR
Flying, vigilance, cleave 3
White creatures have first strike.
Black creatures have lifelink.
Red creatures have haste.
All creatures attack each turn if able.
5/4
~~~~~

Okay, let me do some explaining, since this raises a few questions.

---First: "Black gets lifelink and white gets first strike?"

There's actually quite a bit of precedent for this. But the most direct to cite is MaRo himself: in an article he wrote he discussed shifting the keywords around in the color pie, and at the end of the day, he had a pile of keywords for each color and one for each color combo. White/Black had lifelink (called "spirit link" at the time), Black/Red had haste, and Red/White had double- and first strike. Black has a very flavorful precedent for lifelink, as well - think of it as "target creature loses 1 life and you gain 1 life" and it looks more familiar. All that being said, if you think people will too often mentally switch the white and black abilities, swap them.

---Second: "All creatures? Not just creatures you control?"

Demons typically have drawbacks to summoning them. Arz's thing is war, so the drawback you get with him is global combat benefits, because he likes to see bloodshed. In the right deck it shouldn't be much of a drawback - just as with any demon, don't summon him unless you can handle his demands. He supports you in that he has vigilance AND can multi-block - and Cleave 3 on a multi-blocking creature can get sick very fast. Your opponent will hate attacking in to him. (Assuming Cleave remains "combat damage" and isn't changed to being only on the attack.)

---Third: "What's white about him?"

I recognize that white's flavor here is a bit lacking. But an effect like this, on a guy like this, demands to be mythic, and so it needs to be WBR; and not all tri-color creatures fully represent all three component colors. (How does Empyrial Archangel represent green? Only tangentially, and mainly because she's from Bant.) More solidly, because of the nature of his other abilities, he really appreciates having vigilance.

SilverWolfie says... #79

I'm not sure if this set has counters, and I'm not sure where to look for more information on it, but here's one more idea, kinda out of blue, from me.

WRB

Libel, Peace monger

Legendary Creature- Human Cleric

First Strike, Cleave 1

CARDNAME must be blocked if able.

Whenever a creature is deal damage by CARDNAME, put a bribery counter on that creature.

Sacrifice CARDNAME: Gain control of all creatures with bribery counters, untap them, they gain haste. At the beginning of the next end step, remove all counters from them and lose control of them.

1/4

I'm bad at names. Also, I think this shows off more of the white side of the shard. It starts out as a large defender, or a bad attacker, but it ends in an Insurrection . The bribery counter could be anything, betrayal counters, hell even -1/-1. If the set uses counters (once again, I don't know) it could be gain control of all creatures with counters. Vigilance could also help, if you feel it is under powered.
