wallisface & Grubbernaut: I think you’ve helped me figure out why I dislike proxies lol. Thanks!

Grubbernaut that’s a fair point. I guess I look at proxies as a slippery slope - one guy proxies a Taiga, so I proxy a Badlands, then someone else proxies an Imperial Seal to upgrade their Diabolic Tutor and all the sudden our decks are filled with lined-notebook paper proxies instead actual cards.

Every group uses their own rules - the requirement of owning a proxy in my playgroup helps make sure that we’re still actually playing with cards instead of lined notebook paper.

DemonDragonJ the original dual lands are worth over double the value of most of the decks in my playgroup. I’d get salty if people were proxying in cards of that high of value into our games if they didn’t own it. To each their own tho.

Thanks, splankoperson1! I tried a Temur mutate deck with Illuna as well, but at the time I had better black cards than red and my Illuna build ended up being basically a Simic deck with some dual lands for Illuna.

Fingers crossed on more another mutate/Ikoria set soon! I’m excited for the Ixalan set next winter as it should help my Innistrad’s Hottest Club: Voldaren Estates Vamp tribal deck.

splankoperson1 I tried using Ivy as a simic Mutate commander, but there isn’t enough Simic mutate cards for it to go off the way you want it to; I need more auras/enchantment to make an Ivy deck work.

I bought duplicates of most of the mutate cards I have and I use those as tokens to keep track of What mutates onto ivy.

I put together a Sultai mutate deck built around Otrimi, please take a look at it here and let me know what you think! EDH Sultai Mutating Monstrosities

Proxies of cards you already own for the convenience of not having to shuffle cards between decks is acceptable in my playgroup, but if we can proxy anything we want then our games would turn into a game of prison MTG with nothing off limits:

Cool build! I really like Illuna - it’s great to see a build with her as commander and Animar in the 99 (probably makes the rest of the table feel better too). Have you considered Ivy, Gleeful Spellthief in the 99? Her ability goes great with Mutate as it allows you to get 2 big boys onto the field for the price of 1.

Great build! I’ve been working on doing a 5-coloured mutate deck with Surgeon General Commander as my commander, but I had trouble ramping it fast enough to keep up with the table.

Ivy, Gleeful Spellthief is great with mutate (even in the 99) as every time you mutate another creature, you can copy that mutation onto Ivy and have 2 big boys instead of 1.

seshiro_of_the_orochi this is Chakagozio’s deck, but I also play Strefan and I liked your feedback/advice so I wanted to pick your brain on Shadowgrange Archfiend. Sorry for the confusion everyone!

Chakagozio you’re welcome, happy to help!

seshiro_of_the_orochi - these suggestions are helpful to me, thanks! I originally added Drana, Kalastria Bloodchief, but I feel like it’s ability is expensive for what it is. I just removed her in favour of adding Shadowgrange Archfiend back in because the madness/blood token synergy basically turns it into a 4-drop asymmetrical board wipe with a draw at instant speed (each opponent sacs 1 plus you can flash SA as a blocker). What are your thoughts on this vs. keeping Drana?

Cool build! Might I recommend Nighthawk Scavenger over Vampire Nighthawk?

I built a Strefan deck too (Vampiric Bloodsport) and it’s fun to see the other directions/tweaks people take with him as the commander.

January 28, 2023 8:50 a.m.

Cool build! I see Vampire Nighthawk much more frequently than Nighthawk Scavenger in EDH builds - is there a reason for this? Nighthawk Scavenger seems like a much better card to me, but I’m also pretty new to MTG.

Cool build! I’m gonna have to dig into this deeper to see if I should slot some more of these into my vamp tribal deck Vampiric Bloodsport

January 20, 2023 2:56 p.m.

I understand your sentiment RE: blood tokens - they’re a lot easier to ramp in EDH against multiple opponents compared to 1v1

January 20, 2023 8:45 a.m.

Thank you, Blackgate! It’s been very consistent so far, more than I was expecting. Unless they get wiped, I’ve ended up with plenty of blood tokens all but once. Strefan isn’t usually the biggest threat as a commander at the table or vampire on my board so he doesn’t get targeted often, but I’m usually deemed a threat early after I’ve cheated out a couple of big vamps.

Thanks again for checking this out! Please let me know if you have any suggestions for improvements.

I really like Voldaren Bloodcaster  Flip in EDH; I’ve had it transform almost every game I play. Just started playing vampire tribal in EDH and it’s been a blast! Please check out my deck Vampiric Bloodsport and let me know what you think. There’s an Ixalan set scheduled for next winter I hear, hopefully we get more good vamps then!

January 19, 2023 11:33 p.m.

It’s a shame that Nighthawk Scavenger isn’t standard legal to replace Midnight Assassin (even Vampire Nighthawk would be an upgrade)

January 19, 2023 3:42 p.m.

Using Scute Swarm as the base for a mutate-based 2-for-1 Ivy Voltron approach can ramp wide with big creatures awfully fast.
