Would Fog prevent damage from sources that are not creatures?

Asked by SoulCalibur 11 years ago

I am working on a type of fog deck, and I notice that Fog specifically states that it prevents combat damage; however, would damage from other sources be considered blocked?

If "damage" is in the card ability, I would think that it would work; however, cards such as Chalice of Life  Flip would still do damage since their ability just states "loss of life".

Am I correct?

No. Combat damage specifically from creatures attacking you in the combat phase. All other damage (spells, creature abilities) is considered noncombat damage.

Also, technically Chalice of Life does not do damage, it causes loss of life. This is important because some spells do prevent all damage, but chalice of life's ability would still work.

From the Comprehensive Rulebook:

Combat Damage

Damage dealt during the combat damage step by attacking creatures and blocking creatures as a consequence of combat.
