Will thunderbreak regent's ability still resolve if it is given hexproof?

Asked by krisb2k6y 9 years ago

If thunder break regent is targetted by heros downfall, but i then cast rangers guile to give him hex proof now making him an illegal target for heros downfall will his 3 damage ability when spells targets him still take place? because wont his ability go on stack as soon as hes targeted making it not matter that after he gains hex proof hes an invalid target because his ability should have already went on stack as soon as he was targeted?

Please link all cards in your question.

Thunderbreak Regent

He will still deal damage. Abilities exist independent of their source so even if it gets destroyed or the original spells doesn't resolve the damage dealing ability will still happen.

Thunderbreak Regent's ability triggers when your opponent targets it. The ability goes onto the stack above the spell that triggered it; this happens before players can cast additional spells or activate abilities.

Once the ability is on the stack, it will resolve independently of the spell that triggered it. The ability doesn't care at all about that spell (it resolves before that spell does anyway).
