When Chalice of Life is on the battlefield, do I only have to gain life from that to make it transform?

Asked by mtgtroll 5 years ago

When you tap Chalice of Life, you gain one life. The card also states that if you have 10 or more life than your starting total, transform Chalice of Life. (into Chalice of Death)

Can I gain 10 extra life from another source? Or do I need to gain that life from Chalice of Life.

Please link cards using double square brackets, like so:

[[Chalice of Life]]

Chalice of Life  Flip

You can gain life from any source you want, but you need to use the Chalice of Life  Flip's ability in order to meet the transform condition. If you block an attack with a lifelink creature that pushes you to 10 or more life over your starting total, the Chalice will not flip automatically, but will flip when you activate its ability (and the ability resolves successfully).

The game actually has no way to track where exactly the 10 life over starting total came from.
