What is the combo between Chalice of the Void and Trinisphere?
Asked by mtg_deckmaster 12 years ago
Hello, this is a question that I've had for a while.
I have a Trinisphere and a Chalice of the Void (X=3). What is the combo? Does it lock other people out due to everything costing 3 or less being countered? Thank you

Also note that Chalice of the Void does not couter spells with CMC X or less. It only counters spells with CMC equal to X. The CMC of a spell is derived from its actual mana cost. Cost increasers and cost reducers are not taken into account. If a spell with X in its mana cost is cast, the CMC of such spell on the stack will include the chosen X value (in all other zones, X=0 for purposes of calculating CMC). So, Chalice of the Void with X=3 will for example counter Blaze with X=2.

The converted mana cost of a card is always derived from the printed values in that card's upper right corner. The CMC of a card will never change, even though alternate costs, additional costs, and cost reductions may change the total casting cost of the card.
Trinisphere imposes a unique kind of cost that applies after additional costs and cost reductions are applied. If the total casting cost of a spell would be less than three mana, Trinisphere causes the spell to cost three mana. Trinisphere does not change the CMC of the spell (see above).

No it doesn't. Trinisphere increases the cost that players have to pay for spells cheaper than three, but it does not in fact override their actual converted mana cost. Any player will have to pay 2R to cast Shock , but its CMC is still 1, so Chalice of the Void with X=3 will not counter it.
