What happens when you own my stuff and you lose?
Asked by -MisterJ- 11 years ago
Reason I'm asking is pretty basic. I'm working on a Phage EDH deck and the question revolves around Phage the Untouchable rebounding from Endless Whispers
Lets say I sac off Phage with Whispers in play. She resolves to the graveyard. Target opponent takes control of her. Due to her first stated ability opponent loses the game.
Does Phage then return to MY graveyard when that players loses the game since I am originally the cards owner? Or does it officially go to that player graveyard?
If it resolves to land in that graveyard due to state-based actions that player can not assign another player to take control of Phage.
So... Then does it stands to reason that Whispers should trigger again since it WAS in play if it returns to my graveyard?
Thanks in advance for answers folks!
Well I should have been more specific. I generally play EDH in a group setting with a minimum of 3 players and prefer 4 players. So given that loss of game is not prevented in this instance...
One player loses the game, what happens?

Here's the relevant rule for players leaving the game in a multiplayer format.
"800.4a When a player leaves the game, all objects (see rule 109) owned by that player leave the game, any effects which give that player control of any objects or players end, and all spells and abilities controlled by that player on the stack cease to exist. Then, if there are any objects still controlled by that player, those objects are exiled. This is not a state-based action. It happens as soon as the player leaves the game. If the player who left the game had priority at the time he or she left, priority passes to the next player in turn order who's still in the game."
Phage the Untouchable would be exiled immediately once the player who currently controlled it lost the game.

That is exactly what I needed. Thanks! I hate knowing that this would ruin my chances of winning a multiple player game, but I suppose that is the cost playing the card.

It should be noted that other players can never own your cards. A player always owns all objects he or she brought to the game.
Also, a player's cards can never be put into another player's graveyard, hand, or library.

While I understand that I don't fully understand why Phage would be exiled. I know what the rule says now. I can read it. Doesn't mean I understand it. In the examples given by the rule posted in some instances the creature is returned to its original owner, and in one instance it is not.
In the scenario provided... A multiplayer EDH game in which Phage just entered play in another players control, but is not that creatures owner and has no claim on it other than Endless Whispers... Seems to me it should return to my side of the field as an active creature.
So how do I know when a creature is returned to my control and when its not? Obviously sometimes it is returned to my control if someone were to use Mind Control on Phage then lost somehow
Is it because there is an Aura involved here that falls off first?

Phage doesn't return to you in this case because you have no claim to it. If someone Mind Control ed something, then lost, the control-changing effect that caused that player to control the enchanted creature will end. The creature has someone to whom it must return - the original controller. In this case, the original controller of this instance of Phage has lost the game, and Phage is exiled because no other player controls it after its last controller lost the game.

According to the Comprehensive Rules of MTG:"A game ends immediately when a player wins, when the game is a draw, or when the game is restarted."When a game ends, everything stops. No abilities activate, no cards are sent to graveyards, etc. Of course, this only occurs when the game ends. If your opponent plays something like Krosan Grip , then the game does not end and Phage remains in your graveyard. If your opponent prevents loss without removing Endless Whispers, then Phage will go to your opponent's graveyard as long as Phage is considered "under your opponent's control."
