what happens when copy a Copy Artifact?
Asked by lendrick 11 years ago
for a pratical example, I have a Copy Artifact copying a Sword of War and Peace and cast a Copy Enchantment copying Copy Artifact .
I'll have two Sword of War and Peace copies or a Sword of War and Peace and a useless Copy Artifact copy?
(kinda confusing, something copy a copy...)
I'm not 100% sure, but my interpretation is that you get a copy of the Copy Artifact spell itself, which allows you to decide on the artifact to be copied. So while you have the choice in making your Copy Enchantment --> Copy Artifact --> Sword of War and Peace , you are not obligated to do so. If there were another artifact in play that you would prefer to copy, you have that option.

I might be wrong too, who knows right? Sometimes rules do slip my mind.

Oracle text for Copy Artifact "You may have Copy Artifact enter the battlefield as a copy of any artifact on the battlefield, except it's an enchantment in addition to its other types."
When you cast Copy Enchantment and it resolves, it enters the battlefield as a copy of an enchantment. Since Copy Artifact is a copy of an artifact and still an enchantment, you can copy the Copy Artifact . Copy Artifact enters the battlefield as a copy of an artifact.
So when you cast Copy Enchantment you get a replacement effect where it enters as a chosen enchantment, in this case Copy Artifact . When you select to have it enter as a copy of Copy Artifact , it gets another replacement effect where you choose an artifact to copy and have it enter the battlefield as a copy of that artifact.
So you can have three Sword of War and Peace , two of which are both an artifact and an enchantment, and one which is the original and just an artifact.
Copyception.

Actually once copy artifact hits the battlefield, it acts as an enchantment that is a copy of target artifact, so copy enchantment can copy the copy artifact, but at the time, copy artifact isn't copy artifact, it's the sword.

Copy Enchantment that targets your "Copy Artifact " will become a copy of whatever that artifact is. You won't get to pick another artifact.
Because Copy Artifact is an enchantment as well as an artifact (once a target was selected and it is on the field), it is a legal target for Copy Enchantment . However, when you make a copy of something, it has all the characteristics of the thing it is copying.
So if you had your Copy Artifact become a copy of Sword of War and Peace , your Copy Enchantment will also be a Sword of War and Peace (if your target was your Copy Artifact ed Sword of War and Peace ) because that is what the characteristics of thing copy target are.

But does it have to be the sword or can you retarget the copy artifact effect as the copy enchantment resolves. Once copy enchantment become copy artifact the first thing would be to select target artifact.
It's the retargetting aspect that's confusing.

When Copy Enchantment copies a Copy Artifact, the Copy Enchantment becomes a copy of what Copy Artifact is copying. You cannot "retarget".

@apoptosis. Once Copy Artifact resolves, it's no longer copy artifact, you have to think of it like that. For example. Let's say the only permanent on the field is the sword. You drop down a copy artifact targeting the sword. Now you have two swords, one is an artifact, the other is an artifact enchantment. Therefor when you throw down copy enchantment, you can use the sword that is part enchantment type, or any other enchantments on the field.

A copy effect copies everything written on the original card, and also takes into account any other copy effects the original currently has going on. Your original Copy Artifact is now an Artifact Enchantment - Equipment card named Sword of War and Peace with a mana cost of 3 etc. If you make a copy of this thing, the copy will also be an Artifact Enchantment - Equipment blah blah blah.

Rhadamanthus CMC too? So if Copy Artifact targets an artifact with a CMC >3 then it can't be destroyed by Abrupt Decay (for example)?

It copies the exact mana cost. If Copy Artifact copies Unscythe, Killer of Kings , then it has a mana cost of UBBR.

Yeah, I was wrong. Sorry, didn't know what I was thinking. It copies the enchantment that is already in play, so you do not get to choose again for a different artifact. You get three swords.

You will have a copy of Sword of War and Peace that is also an enchantment. Copying a copy is actually very simple.
