What happens when a defender dies after it has been declared as a blocker?

Asked by Arvail 11 years ago

I have a Consuming Aberration about to do some heavy lifting on the field and I assign him as an attacker. My opponent responds with assigning a blocker. I then use Hero's Downfall and kill the defending creature. Does my attack strike home or am I left blocked?

Once a creature becomes blocked it remains blocked, it doesn't matter if the blocking creature dies. If he had trample you could trample through all the damage since there is no blocker when it comes time to assign combat damage but since he doesn't he does no damage to the defending player.
