what happens if i Cloudshift a Primordial Hydra?

Asked by JClegend 12 years ago

i was playing a game at home when the question came up, does Cloudshift kill Primordial Hydra . this stumped me and my friends because of the counter effect. would it keep its counters or become a 0/0?

When an object changes zones it becomes a new object. Counters do not remain unless the creature has an ability specifying it. Now, since you are not casting the Hydra, X is 0. Since X is zero, it enters as a 0/0 and dies.

The hydra would continue to have any number of counters on him, for you exile him in the state he is. If you were to use Genesis Wave to get him out then he would be a 0/0. In this instance he stays in whatever state he was.

@fam

Actually, when the hydra changes zones it loses any counters it has. When it enters, X is 0 as it was not cast (as you decide the value of X only when casting the hydra).

There's currently only Skullbriar, The Walking Grave for creatures that keep counters on it when it changes public zones.

GoblinsInc has the right answer. When a card changes zones, it becomes a new object completely unrelated to what it was before, and that includes not having any counters the previous object had. Since the Hydra brought back from exile wasn't cast, X defaults to 0 and it has no +1/+1 counters on it.

famzim13, maybe you're thinking of Phasing, which does work that way.

Yeah, also I forgot that the hydra used counters, that it wasn't just power and toughness of X.
