Volrath, the Shapestealer interaction with creatures with protection/shroud

Asked by Gaurwaith 4 years ago

Hello! I would like to know how does Volrath, the Shapestealer interacts with creatures with protection or shroud.

For example: let's say I control Volrath, the Shapestealer and Stonecoil Serpent with x counters on it. Does the activated hability of Volrath targets him so he can become a copy of the Stonecoil Serpent? or Does the protection stops him even thought he targets himself ?

Thanks in advance

Spells and abilities target if, and only if, they use the word "target". Both of Volrath, the Shapestealer's abilities use the word "target", so neither can be used on a creature with protection from him or shroud.

I'm a bit confused by the last sentence of your question. What do you mean by "Does the protection stops him even thought he targets himself"? Volrath targets the creature with the counter on it, he doesn't target himself.

Thank you very much! I was a bit confused because I thoght that maybe the ability targeted Volrath as main target and the creature you transformed him was just treated as a "choice" so it didn't mattered if it had some sort of protection as long it had a counter on it. I've seen a lot of deck builds with creatures like [stonecoil serpent] [Hexdrinker] or [Mistcutter Hydra] and got a little bit confused
