Varolz and Nighthowler scavange How does it work?

If i have a Nighthowler in the graveyard, how does the scavange from Varolz, the Scar-Striped Effect it?

Eg Nighthowler +3 creatures in the graveyard with Varolz,the Scar-striped on the battlefield, When i scavenge do i get 3 counters, 4, or none?

0 counters from scavenging Nighthowler . Nighthowler's ability isn't a characteristic-defining ability, so that means it only works while it's on the battlefield. For an example of a creature with a CDA for its power and toughness, see Lord of Extinction .
