Vadrok, Apex of Thunder and Release to the Wind

Asked by ulysses2009 3 years ago

Hello together, I still struggle a little with the mutate mechanic and hope to find some answers.

I understood, that if for example Vadrok, Apex of Thunder is mutated onto another creature and this creature moves zones, they split, but end up in the same zone. So if i cast Release to the Wind, they will get exiled (if i refuse to send Vadrok to the command zone or something like that) and can be cast separately after that. Having cast the first creature from exile, can i mutate Vadrok onto it or do the two alternative costs (without paying & mutate) interfere? Can i choose to pay for mutate in this case, ignoring the "free cast" from Release to the Wind? Or am i forced to play him as a creature instead of mutating to avoid leaving him in exile?

The fact that both mutate and "without paying its mana cost" are alternate costs means that you can only use one of them. Furthermore Release to the Wind only states that you may cast it without paying its mana cost, this means that you can not cast it any other way.
