Until end of turn and death

Asked by mewersthecat 13 years ago

I have a Flayer of the HateboundMTG Card: Flayer of the Hatebound with 0 counters on him..

My opponent is at 11 life... I cast Ranger's GuileMTG Card: Ranger's Guile on Flayer of the HateboundMTG Card: Flayer of the Hatebound and after it resolves.. i cast FlingMTG Card: Fling and sacrifice my Flayer of the HateboundMTG Card: Flayer of the Hatebound to do 5 damage to my opponent...

The question is.. when Flayer of the HateboundMTG Card: Flayer of the Hatebound comes back from the grave, I'd have it do it's damage to the opponent, would Ranger's GuileMTG Card: Ranger's Guile still be affecting him, and he'd come back as a 6/4, and do 6 damage to my opponent.. or would Ranger's GuileMTG Card: Ranger's Guile affect go away after he died?

Because it reads until end of turn... and i see no reason why the +1/+1 and hexproof should go away just because he died.. considering he gets it until "end of turn".. however.. my opponent obviously wanted to disagree with me.

As soon as a permanent leaves play it loses any knowledge it had before. So when it enters it has no previously knowledge of being the field beforehand and so it is an entirely new permanent.

Now I know what you're thinking what about undying. The trigger goes on the stack and checks the condition of the creature right before it left play.

Cited from the Salvation rules page:

If a permanent leaves play and later returns to play, its treated as an entirely new permanent with no memory of anything from its former existence. (Phasing is an exception to this; see rule 502.15, Phasing. Permanents that phase out also dont trigger any comes-into-play or leaves-play abilities.)

As soon as a permanent has left the battlefield, upon its return it will be treated as a new object regardless to how it left in the first place.

As Flayer of the HateboundMTG Card: Flayer of the Hatebound leaves the battlefield transiently following the FlingMTG Card: Fling, upon its return, it is a "new creature," and Ranger's GuileMTG Card: Ranger's Guile will no longer apply.

As soon as a permanent, in this case your Flayer of the HateboundMTG Card: Flayer of the Hatebound, leaves the zone it's in, it forgets all about its previous existence.

When your flayer hits the graveyard and comes back, it comes back as a new Flayer of the HateboundMTG Card: Flayer of the Hatebound, and will not remember that it was under the influence of Ranger's GuileMTG Card: Ranger's Guile.
