Underworld Cerberus and Gift of Immortality

Asked by Ryeking31 11 years ago

If I enchant my underworld Cerberus with gift of immortality. What happens when the Cerberus dies? Sorry I cannot link to the cards. Posting from my mobile. Is he exiled or in play?

What I think happens, is that you can choose the order the effects go on the stack, and if Underworld Cerberus 's ability resolves first, he remains exiled, and you get to bring creatures back to your hand, and if Gift of Immortality 's ability resolves first, you bring your Cereberus to play, and you still bring creatures back to your hand.

Here's my reasoning.

The reason why I think that whatever effect happens to the cerberus first will cause the other to not happen is because of a known case:

If you exile a persist card, like Kitchen Finks when it's trigger is on the stack with say... a Deathrite Shaman , than it won't return to the battlefield. The interaction with cerberus and gift of immortality is similar to this case

and neither triggered ability will fizzle, because neither have targets, but some steps of them will be impossible to perform.

When an ability has actions that it can't perform, it won't perform those actions, but it will still to whatever else it does as best as it can, so the Cerberus's ability will still return creatures to your hand, even if you couldn't exile the cerberus

To quote the Release Notes: "If you can't exile Underworld Cerberus when its last ability resolves, perhaps because it's been exiled by another spell or ability, each player will still return all creature cards from his or her graveyard to his or her hand."

as far as it returning to play and staying there I don't know. Wouldn't it get to stay as being a "new permanent" since it changed zones?

Sam_I_am is correct about the ordering and the resolution of the triggered abilities.

If Underworld Cerberus is returned to the battlefield by Gift of Immortality , it will be a new game object with no 'memory' of its previous existence. The triggered ability of the original object will not track the new object. The same rule is also relevant if the triggered abilities are ordered the other way and Underworld Cerberus is exiled- Gift of Immortality would not be able to 'find' Underworld Cerberus .

Sam_I_am and Tradeylouish have got it right, so those could be best answers.

I think he's looking for a more definitive answer, one with less guesswork. And while I agree the most likely scenario is that if Underworld Cerberus ability goes on the stack last and resolves first then Gift of Immortality won't be able to bring it back, and vise versa, if Gift of Immortality goes on last and resolves first, then Cerberus will come back but won't be exiled and would not bring back all creatures from the graveyard to your hand. It's still very possible that if he dies and his ability resolves first then Gift of Immortality would still bring him back even though he changed zones from the graveyard to exile, because Gift of Immortality does not specify what zone the creature is to return from. So I'm actually looking for a more definitive answer on this myself.

Again, Sam_I_am had it right above in #3. If Underworld Cerberus gets exiled from the graveyard before Gift of Immortality resolves, gift will fail to find it in the graveyard and do nothing.

*400.7. An object that moves from one zone to another becomes a new object with no memory of, or relation to, its previous existence.

You actually choose whether Gift of Immortality or Underworld Cerberus resolves first. They are both triggered the moment the creature dies, and you get finally say on order of simultaneous triggers. In short, you get to choose.

ok that's what I was looking for, something definitive like "400.7" and not well it's similar to this so I think it should work kinda like it.
