un-cards in edh

Asked by koylucumert 7 years ago

so i have a question. since un-cards are commander legal now (for now), how does AWOL interact with the commander. can its owner return a commander that i AWOL ed to the command zone ?. it is a replacement effect like banishing light so i would say no but i am not sure

AWOL's first sentence causes the commander to be exiled. You can replace that event by putting it in the command zone, like any other exile event. The second sentence can't remove it from exile so it bricks.

But thats not exactly how replacement effects work. For example if i Banishing Light a commander and its owner can put it in the command zone but since the banishing light is a single effect, as long as the commander doesnt move from the command zone while banishing light is on the battlefield, when banishing light is destroyed it returns the commander from the command zone to the battlefield. Unlike Oblivion Ring which has 2 effects and doesnt remember the commander when it is put in the command zone

The way AWOL is currently worded (it got a long needed oracle update, but that update made it even weirder) it exiles the attacking creature (you can replace that with putting the commander in the command zone). Then it removes the creature from the game, regardless of what zone it's currently in (I guess put it in your sideboard even though you don't have a sideboard). Then it finds that creature outside the game and returns it to the game, but in the absolutely-removed-from-the-freaking-game-forever zone. This is where we get in some real hot water. In the spirit of commander and how silver boarder is supposed to make the game fun I would say you can replace this with putting the commander back in the command zone, for the second time in resolving this spell. However, according to rule 13 of commander:

"Abilities which refer to other cards owned outside the game (Wishes, Spawnsire, Research, Ring of Ma'ruf) do not function in Commander without prior agreement on their scope from the playgroup."

So AWOL shouldn't be able to do it's third zone change of bringing the commander back from outside the game. So either leave it outside the game never to return, return it but in a zone that's functionally never to return, or return it to the command zone. You have justification for any of those three answers.
