two of the same companion question for commander

Asked by zexicore 1 year ago

In Commander, if you put a card with the companion ability in your deck, can you then use another copy of the same card as your decks chosen companion? since the actual deck does not have the same card twice, and you have only one chosen companion, would this be allowed? I don't think so but I can't find a reason as to why it wouldn't be

I can't find a specific rule against it, but I would personally count this as an unfair and bad-faith move, against the spirit if not the actual rules of Commander, and singleton formats in general. So while it might be legal in a rules-lawyer-y way, since the external companion officially starts outside the game and not as part of your constructed deck (no sideboards in Commander), I would ask you to remove it and restart the action.

Commander is independently run by the rules committee and the official commander rules can be found at mtgcommander.net. Rule 3 of deck construction is "A Commander deck must contain exactly 100 cards, including the commander. If you’re playing a companion, it must adhere to color identity and singleton rules. While it is not part of the deck, it is effectively a 101st card."

The reason you can't do this comes from the following rule:

903.11. If a player is allowed to bring a card from outside the game into a Commander game, that player can’t bring a card into the game this way if it has the same name as a card that player had in their starting deck, if it has the same name as a card that the player owns in the current game, or if any color in its color identity isn’t in the color identity of the player’s commander.

So though you would technically be allowed to name Keruga, the Macrosage as your Companion if you also put Keruga in your deck, there would be no way to actually get the Companion into the game after it starts. You won't be able to use it.

You can't even name a card that is in your deck as a companion. I quoted the rule from mtgcommander.net about companions needing to adhere to the singleton rule and 903.1 refers to mtgcommander.net for additional resources for the commander format.

903.1. In the Commander variant, each deck is led by a legendary creature designated as that deck’s commander. The Commander variant was created and popularized by fans; an independent rules committee maintains additional resources at MTGCommander.net. The Commander variant uses all the normal rules for a Magic game, with the following additions.
