Trading Post and sacrificing creatures
Asked by Grimaldii 12 years ago
Hey Folks!,
I was reading comments on Gatherer for this card, and I think this is legal, but I'm not entirely sure.In regards to the 3rd of ability of Trading Post . Would this allow me to sacrifice Wurmcoil Engine , thereby spawning 2 wurm tokens, and then return Wurmcoil Engine to my hand with the second half of the ability? Or would it not be sent to the graveyard until the whole thing resolves?
If so, I may add a couple to my Grand Architect illusion deck...

That's not correct.
Sacrificing the creature is part of the cost, but targets are chosen before costs are paid (this is true for both spells and abilities). Therefore, Wurmcoil Engine won't be in the graveyard at the time you are required to choose a target.

Ah. Well then. I was mistaken.
I'd thought that you had to pay costs before the ability went on the stack.
But Epochalyptik knows what he's talking about.
You could, however, grab another Wurmcoil Engine in the graveyard, and just rinse and repeat.

From the Comprehensive Rules:
602.2b The remainder of the process for activating an ability is identical to the process for casting a spell listed in rules 601.2b - h. Those rules apply to activating an ability just as they apply to casting a spell. An activated ability's analog to a spell's mana cost (as referenced in rule 601.2e) is its activation cost.
601.2c The player announces his or her choice of an appropriate player, object, or zone for each target the spell requires.
601.2e The player determines the total cost of the spell. Usually this is just the mana cost. Some spells have additional or alternative costs. Some effects may increase or reduce the cost to pay, or may provide other alternative costs. Costs may include paying mana, tapping permanents, sacrificing permanents, discarding cards, and so on.
Therefore, you would first have to declare the target, and then sacrifice the permanent as the additional cost.

Thanks folks! Starting to get a hang of orders and stack resolution and such. Just played casually with a group of friends up to now, but I'm looking to 'step it up a notch'. You're all very patient and helpful here! :)

Yes, this would work, because Sacrificing the creature is part of the cost.
1, tap, sacrifice a creature:
Because that part is all in front of the colon, they are all costs that must be paid to activate the ability and put it on the stack. Therefore, yes, you could then return Wurmcoil Engine to your hand after you sacrificed it to Trading Post .
