tokens and undying
Asked by wallsh 11 years ago
Mikaeus, the Unhallowed is on the field and I have 3 zombie tokens on the field, if my tokens are destroyed do the tokens cease to exist before the undying effect will return them to the field?
So the token dies but it instantly poofs once it hits the graveyard? So I am assuming it does not work

Pretty much. Once it leaves the battlefield, regardless of where it goes, it's gone. For instance Cloudshift or Unsummon will cause tokens to "poof" and won't come back to the battlefield or actually go to your hand, respectively.

@billpasdmf: Technically, a token targeted by Unsummon will return to your hand. It will cease to exist the next time state-based actions are checked.
A token exiled by Cloudshift will go to exile, but there's another rule that prevents tokens from changing zones once they leave the battlefield. A token that has been exiled cannot return to the battlefield, so it will remain in exile until SBAs are checked, at which point it will cease to exist.
@wallsh: The tokens do change zones once, so they trigger undying. However, they cease to exist before the undying abilities are even put onto the stack. When those abilities resolve, they will do nothing because the creatures they concern are no longer in the graveyard.

Epochalyptik Stand corrected on the Unsummon . Misspoke, as it were.

When a token goes to the graveyard, it ceases to exist shortly thereafter when checked by state based effects. At any point that a token creature is removed from the battlefield it ceases to exist, regardless of what zone it gets moved to.
