Time counters

Asked by daniferrito 11 years ago

So both cards with suspend or vanishing have time counters on them, and when the last one is removed, the card with suspend gets cast for free, and the card with vanishing must be sacrificed.

Cards with suspend: Greater Gargadon Aeon Chronicler Cards with vanishing: Chronozoa

Now, when i manage to remove or add counters from other sources (Timecrafting , Fury Charm , Timebender ) how does it work? would Aeon Chronicler losing counters due to one of those effects make me draw cards? If the last time counter from Chronozoa is removed with an ability instead of naturally being removed due to the upkeep starting, does it get sacrificed? If Greater Gargadon is suspended and something removes the last counter, does it get cast?

The trick is how the ability is phrased. Abilities which care exactly -how- a thing happens tend to have a dependent clause that uses the phrase "in this way" or has an action, and the phrase "Then, if..." to show you that it has to be done that way.

Any time a counter is removed from Aeon Chronicler while it is exiled, you draw a card. It doesn't care how those counters come off. You can draw cards by removing counters in other ways.

Suspend, while a card is in exile, is two abilities. One which controls removing counters at upkeep, and one which says "When the last time counter is removed from this card, if it is in exile, you may cast that card without paying its mana cost if able", so removing the last counter through other means will also allow you to cast the creature, as in Greater Gargadon

Vanishing is basically the same. There's a second ability that just says "When the last counter is removed from this card, sacrifice it" so it also doesn't care how the counters come off.

You should treat spells and abilities that remove time counters in the same way as you treat the time counters getting removed normally.

Yes, you draw cards when a spell or ability removes time counters from Aeon Chronicler

Yes, you get 2 Chronozoa tokens when you remove it's counters with a spell or ability

yes, Greater Gargadon gets cast for free if you remove it's counters with a spell or ability(such as it's own)
