Tidespout Tyrant + Mulldrifter

Asked by daveschreiner 13 years ago

I must be bad at google today. with tidespout tyrant in play (such as in edh), can I evoke mulldrifter, put the mulldrifter's sac trigger on the stack, then put the tyrant's bounce trigger on the stack targeting mulldrifter, and thus use evoked mulldrifter to bounce itself and have a divination every turn?

Tidespout TyrantMTG Card: Tidespout Tyrant, MulldrifterMTG Card: Mulldrifter

No. You evoke Mulldrifter. Evoke is an ability that allows you to pay an alternate casting cost for the evoked spell. When you cast Mulldrifter for its evoke cost, Tidespout Tyrant's ability triggers. You put this ability on the stack and then name a target for it. Mulldrifter is still a creature spell and not a creature, so it is not a legal target for Tidespout Tyrant's ability. Whatever you target with Tyrant will get bounced, then Mulldrifter will resolve and ETB, then Mulldrifter's sacrifice ability will go onto the stack.

Tidespout TyrantMTG Card: Tidespout Tyrant

MulldrifterMTG Card: Mulldrifter

No, because Tidespout's trigger is when you play a spell, which will have to resolve before Mulldrifter resolves and becomes a permanent. You need something that can bounce it at instant speed, or that triggers when something etb to return Mulldrifter to your hand after evoking it.

Don't see it working that way. Tidespout TyrantMTG Card: Tidespout Tyrant would trigger as soon as you cast MulldrifterMTG Card: Mulldrifter, but before he hits the battlefield. I'm pretty sure, and I could be wrong, that you would have to return a permanent to its owner's hand before MulldrifterMTG Card: Mulldrifter was in the battlefield. Since he isn't in the battlefield, he isn't a permanent, and hence, he can't be bounced.

You could pull it off if you use a third creature with Flash (Zealous GuardianMTG Card: Zealous Guardian perhaps?).

  • Play Zealous Guardian (bouncing anything else with Tyrant)
  • Evoke MulldrifterMTG Card: Mulldrifter
  • Put Tidespout TyrantMTG Card: Tidespout Tyrant's trigger on the stack, targeting the Guardian
  • Play Zealous Guardian in response to Mulldrifter's sacrifice trigger
  • Put the Tyrant's trigger on the stack, targeting Mulldrifter
  • Repeat next turn, skipping step one obviously
Five mana (3 colored) for two cards and two ETB triggers (you could abuse with another, external effect) per turn. Not bad.

thanks everyone. makes sense to add something like Zealous GuardianMTG Card: Zealous Guardian though. I like 4 mana for a free bounce effect and two cards every turn.

You could use Words of WindMTG Card: Words of Wind; convert one of your draws into saving your MulldrifterMTG Card: Mulldrifter.
