Take Possession on hexproof

Asked by crunchbite_1 12 years ago

Can I use a Take Possession to (lol) take possession of a creature with hexproof such as Sigarda, Host of Herons , or Geist of Saint Traft .It does not mention antywhere on Take Possession about taking control of "Target" permanent, and that is how this question has come about.I felt as though it would fall under the same sort of ruling and using a Phyrexian Metamorph to copy the creature.Any help is appreiatedThank you very much

It is true that if it doesn't say the word "target" it can get around hexproof. However, auras cast as spells and equip abilities do "target" despite not saying it explicitly. So no you can't use Take Possession on a creature with hexproof.

More explicitly, auras are special enchantments that are cast with a target (the object they are intended to enchant). Since you must choose a target for an aura, Take Possession is targeted and therefore may not be cast on a creature that can't legally be targeted by it.

Note that auras only target while they are spells. If you put an aura into play by some non-casting means it can enchant something it couldn't actually target (although that object must still be able to be legally enchanted by that aura).
