Sword of feast and famine stack
Asked by tempest 12 years ago
If I have Sword of Feast and Famine equipped to Kor Duelist and all 6 damage went through, the sword's ability will trigger twice. Is there time for me to tap the lands I untapped after the first ability on stack resolves so I am tap the lands again after the second ability on stack resolves? Or is there no time in between stacked abilities to do anything?Lets say I have all (3) lands tapped. I attack with Kor Duelist . Can I untap the 3 lands, tap them for 3 mana, untap them again, and tap them again for a total of 6 mana?
For more reference if needed (probably wont, but check it out anyways!) here's the deck: swords- can't live without 'em

Yes. What actually happens here is that the fourth step in the Combat Phase, the Combat Damage step actually happens twice.
Whenever a creature participating in combat has first strike or double strike, only those creatures will deal damage during the first Combat Damage step. Their damage is assigned and dealt as normal, and both players will get priority after damage is assigned to activate abilities or cast spells.
After that step, any remaining creatures that did not have first strike before the first Combat Damage step (and those that have double strike) will assign and deal damage in a second Combat Damage step. Again, both players will have priority to activate spells and abilities.
So to go back to your example: Kor Duelist with Sword of Feast and Famine . The Kor Duelist will deal damage during the first combat damage step, putting a trigger from the sword on the stack. That trigger resolves, and you'll untap your lands and the defending player will discard a card. Before moving on to the next combat damage step, you may then play any spells or abilities you want, with your freshly-untapped lands. Then, Kor Duelist will deal damage again and your sword will trigger again, untapping your lands a second time and forcing your opponent to discard a second card.
It is interesting to note, you can float your mana here from the first combat damage step to the second, which you can't do in any other step or phase transition. One neat party trick was to use this to generate the 10 mana necessary to flash in a Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur . The mana will be lost if you move past the combat damage step to the end of combat step, so you have to use it for instant-speed effects.

you can, the way double strike works is you deal first strike damage, at wich time your sword will trigger. You can then tap the lands. Then regular damage occurs, at which time the sword will trigger again

@BrightGreenLine: Your answer is correct up until the last paragraph. Mana drains from mana pools between every step and phase, including the first and second combat damage steps.

Oh darn. That made me realize that it wouldn't matter i got the mana or not...

You can untap the lands via the first trigger (first combat damage step), retap them before the second trigger resolves (second combat damage step), untap then via the second trigger, and then retap them again to float more mana in the second combat damage step, but you won't be able to float mana from one combat damage step to the next.

Yea. Between casting cards and equipping equipments, I'm always running out of mana so I was wondering if Sword of Feast and Famine helps with that. It does, just not as much as I thought it would.

Good catch, @Epochalyptik. If it actually worked the way I said, you'd be able to float (up to) triple your lands' worth in mana which is completely not correct.
