Switcheroo with Auras or Equipment
Asked by bjbancroft 12 years ago
If I use Switcheroo on an opponent's creature that is enchanted, does the aura stay on the creature, or does it go to the graveyard? And with equipment, does it automatically un-equip, or does it stay equipped to that creature?

Attached auras or equipment will only fall off if the creature they're attached to has become an illegal object for attachment by changing control. Auras with "Enchant creature you control" or something similar will fall off, but others will stay. Though the Equip ability can only target a creature controlled by whoever activated the ability, there isn't a restriction about who controls the creature once it's attached, so equipment will stay.

It would stay equipped/enchanted to that creature, since the creature never leaves play. It would have to leave play somehow for the enchantments/equipments to be removed.

Auras will not fall off the enchanted creature, as long as it's still a legal target for that enchantment ("enchant creature you do/ do not control", etc).
Equipment is similar, in that once the creature is not under that player controls it's no longer an eligible target for the equipment ("attach to target creature you control"). Equipment will fall off the creature, and it's controller will still have it.

Scratch that last part, targeting only matters when equipment is being activated.

This is the only rule about Equip that mentions who controls the creature, and it only has to do when the ability is first activated:
702.6a Equip is an activated ability of Equipment cards. "Equip [cost]" means "[Cost]: Attach this permanent to target creature you control. Activate this ability only any time you could cast a sorcery."

The controller of the equipment could always just re-equip it to another creature they control to "get it back" though right?

Yes, there's nothing stopping them from doing that.

Another thing to note is, the Aura'a and Equipment that remain equipped would still be under the original owners control, so the new controller of the creature cannot activate certain abilities.
Example: You control a Gravecrawler enchanted with Deviant Glee and equipped with Cobbled Wings . Your opponent uses Switcheroo to take control of your Gravedigger . They can now use Deviant Glee 's ability to tap R to give Gravecrawler trample, but they cannot pay 1 to re-equip Cobbled Wings .
The reason for this is in the text of the cards: Deviant Glee has it's ability given to the creature, whereas equip costs stay on the card.

Any equipment or Auras attached to the creature remain attached after the switch.
