Stopping combo of Ratadrabik of Urborg and Boromir, Warden of the Tower

Asked by bhst5019 4 months ago

While this is a question about these cards, its about stacks operation. So a friend has [Boromir, Warden of the Tower] and Ratadrabik of Urborg. He sacrifices Boromir, Warden of the Tower to use the creature's ability. This causes Ratadrabik of Urborg to create a non-legendary token of it. He then targets the ring tempt to the newly formed token thus making it legendary and can perform the sacrifice again. So my question lies here. Can I destroy the token before the ring attempt is made on it? Or does it need to be exiled.?

My thought it I can destroy the token without it becoming legendary. Other person did think it was true and I could only target it after both abilities had resolved.

Objects on the stack resolve one at a time and there is a round of priority between each. You can try to destroy the non-legendary token before the Boromir, Warden of the Tower ability resolves making it both indestructible and his Ring-bearer.

Of note is that "The Ring tempts you" does not target. So technically if we are at the point where the Ring-bearer is being chosen it is too late for interaction. This doesn't mean that your friend can rush through after the Ratadrabik ability makes the token and declare his Ring-bearer depriving you of an opportunity to interact. But if the token is made and you pass priority, you do not get an opportunity to remove something after the choice of Ring-bearer has been made but before it goes into effect.

So, assuming it is his turn. He triggers Boromir, then Ratadrabik in stacks. Priority is passed (no response in this case). The token is then made. Then priority is passed (comes to me). I respond by casting Terror on the token. Priority is passed. Token is destroyed if no there are no other responses, then the ring bearer is made on a different creature. Am I understanding this correctly?

Oh and all other creatures gain indestructible as well.

Some small terminology errors, but you understand how it plays out and are correct about the major points.

Terminology pedantry if you care about being exactly correct as well:

Boromir, Warden of the Tower's bottom ability is activated, not triggered. When Boromir is activated Ratadrabik triggers as the cost is paid and will go on the stack above the Boromir ability. After that you are spot on, except that you left out that his creatures are made indestructible as part of the same ability that makes a Ring-bearer. (you fixed the last point as I was typing)

:) I knew I had made the error before I read your reply. Did not know how to correct it. :) Thanks again for the response. Where I lacked the knowledge was, I did not know that priority was passed as each step occurred. I thought the stack was removed in one swoop.
