Stolen Identity and Sensei's Divining Top

Asked by Profet93 8 years ago

I use Stolen Identity to copy a Sensei's Divining Top.

Two scenarios.1. I choose to use it's cipher ability and exile it/encode it onto a creature2. I choose not to use it's cipher ability and do not exile it/encode it onto a creature.

Can I then tap the "new" Sensei's Divining Top I created to draw a card and then put Stolen Identity back on top of my deck? Does it only work in scenario 2 because I am choosing not to exile it, or does it not work at all regardless of either scenario?

Neither works. If a card refers to its own name, it always means "this card right here" (unless it says "a card named ~"). If you want to draw a card off the original Top, you'll have to put it on top of your library.

I think I see the problem: Stolen Identity doesn't become a copy of the chosen object. It creates a token copy, just like it says. If you activate the 2nd ability of the Token Top then the token will go to the top of your library, and will immediately cease to exist (tokens can't exist outside the battlefield).
