Squirrel Nest and land tapping question

Asked by jasonPecorelli 11 years ago

I have a Squirrel deck and one of my cards is a Squirrel Nest . My question is if I tap the basic land the Squirrel Nest enchants do I still get the mana from the basic land card tappied put into my mana pool and a squirrel token put into play?? Or one and not the other?? And if I put a Vernal Bloom on the same land the Squirrel Nest is enchanting what would it produce when the land is tapped??

Your basic land (let's assume it's a forest) has two abilities once enchanted by Squirrel Nest: "(T): add one G to your mana pool" and "(T): put a 1/1 green Squirrel token into play". Because both abilities require you to pay the cost of tapping your land, and because you cannot use one action to pay for two costs, you can either get a 1/1 Squirrel or G, but not both. If Vernal Bloom was in play, you would get either a 1/1 Squirrel or GG, but still not both.

Sidenote: Vernal Bloom does not enchant a land like Squirrel Nest does. It is a global enchantment, and it will affect all forests you control.

Squirrel Nest gives the enchanted land a new activated ability, separate from its usual tap for mana ability. When you tap it to do one thing it can't do the other, so if you tap it for a Squirrel you don't get mana from that land. However Vernal Bloom is a trigger that adds G to your mana pool whenever you tap enchanted land instead of giving it a new ability, so tapping a land enchanted with both Squirrel Nest and Vernal Bloom for the squirrel token ability would give you 1 Squirrel token and 1 G mana.

@Raitaki: That's incorrect. Vernal Bloom 's and Wild Growth 's abilities only trigger if you tap the land for mana. If you tap the enchanted land to produce a Squirrel token, then you aren't tapping it for mana. You'll only get the Squirrel.
