Spellskite and Hexproof

Asked by Cirdan13 12 years ago

If you were to give Spellskite hexproof and then tried to redirect a spell or ability your opponent controlled would the spell or effect just fizzle, as it's target is no longer legal? Or would Spellkite fizzle because it is unable to change the target of the spell to an illegal target? I'm pretty sure it's the first one but I'm not positive.

If an effect would attempt to change a target of a spell or ability to an illegal target, then the target is not changed.

If you give Spellskite hexproof and then try to change the target of a spell or ability your opponent controls, Spellskite 's ability will not do anything (it will NOT fizzle, it just won't do anything when it resolves).

If you change the target of a spell or ability to Spellskite , then give Spellskite hexproof, the spell or ability will fizzle (assuming Spellskite is its only target) because the target is now illegal.

I'm fairly sure it's the first one. The way I would picture it would be:

  1. You give Spellskite something like Swiftfoot Boots
  2. An opponent activates an ability (let's presume it's Shock ), targetting you
  3. You activate Spellskite s ability, and Shock then targets Spellskite
  4. Shock fizzles as it's target is no longer legal
This is just my take on things, and I may be dead wrong.
