Spells with two parts and Boros Reckoner interaction

Asked by XoXeLo 11 years ago

Let's say I play a chain lightning against an opponent's Boros Reckoner. It deals 3 damage to the Boros. What happens next? Does the Boros ability triggers and goes on top of the stack mid chain lightning or does chain lightning finish resolving (the discard part) and then the Boros ability triggers. I hope I made myseld clear.

Chain Lightning
Boros Reckoner
please link all cards

When an ability triggers it is put on the stack the next time it's controller would get priority. Players don't receive priority during a spell's resolution. I'm not sure where you are getting discarding a card from with Chain Lightning but the Reckoner's controller would have a chance to pay RR to copy the spell and put it on the stack during the resolution of Chain Lightning . Then when the copy of chain lightning goes to resolve players will receive priority and the Boros Reckoner 's ability will go on the stack.

I got confused on the discard part, sorry.

Ok, so If I understood correctly. Chain Lightning does 3 damage to the Boros Reckoner first. Then, the opponent can copy the spell. The copy goes to the stack, and as the copy goes to the stack, Boros Reckoner ability triggers, and goes on top of the copy, correct?

Thank you for the answer.

That is mostly correct. it is hard to explain since the card that pops up from the link is the old one that doesn't have the current oracle text on it. Chain Lightning 's oracle text reads :

Chain Lightning deals 3 damage to target creature or player. Then that player or that creature's controller may pay RR. If the player does, he or she may copy this spell and may choose a new target for that copy.

so what happens is:

The end result is the same as what you said but it is important to note that the copy goes on the stack as part of the resolution of the original spell instead of waiting for priority. Also I need to correct the first sentence of my previous post. Triggered abilities go on the stack the next time any player would receive priority not just its controller.
