Specifics about ending your turn?

Asked by Exiistential 12 years ago

Lets say I pass my turn and my opponent plays an instant in response. Since he didn't pass priority, would I regain priority and then be able to play an enchantment before their turn begins?

Example: opponent has a Guttersnipe on the field, I say I'm ending my turn, and in response they play a Cackling Counterpart . Can I let that resolve and then play a Detention Sphere , or since I initially passed priority to end my turn would it have to be instant speed so I can put it on the stack?

Thanks for the help!

it is possible to get away with that logic if you specify that you wish to end your turn (or state you're passing priority in your 2nd main phase, with the stack empty). It also works for your 1st main phase. But if you simply say pass your turn or some of the other various ways to signify you are ending your turn it is generally a given that you entered your end step when your opponent cast their instant (though generally your opponent should state what phase they're casting the spell as you would both be skipping though taking turns passing priority a good number of times).

If i want to cast an instant or activate in ability before my opponents turn, I typically say on your end step....... Basically your opponent need to specify what phase he's casting it on. Typically though when you say I end my turn you can assume that that is your end step, and that your opponent has one last chance to respond on your turn, before priority is passed to them.

First, you can't cast a spell in response to a phase/step change. Just doesn't happen. Your opponent could play the spell during the end step, however.

Here's how an end step then plays out:

513.1. First, all abilities that trigger "at the beginning of the end step" or "at the beginning of the next end step" go on the stack.

513.2. Second, the active player gets priority. Players may cast spells and activate abilities.

I bileve that after Cackling Counterpart resolves, you could play Detention Sphere . Not 100% sure, though.

Unless a card is an instant or has Flash it can only be cast during a Main phase AND when the stack is clear.

Like Gatecrashed said, once you say "pass turn" or something to that effect you have declared that you have entered your End step. Therefore you could not cast Detention Sphere in response to Cackling Counterpart because it is neither a Main phase nor is the stack clear.

However, if you were to somehow give Detention Sphere the Flash ability, like with card:Alchemist's Refuge, then you could play it in response to an instant.

meecht is correct. You can only play Detention Sphere if the stack is clear on your main phase, or the spell can be cast at instant speed. So, no, you cannot wait for Cackling Counterpart to resolve and then cast Detention Sphere because it would violate the "stack is clear on your main phase" part.
