Snapcster mage + Genesis Wave
Asked by cooknathan 13 years ago
Can I Snapcaster Mage a Genesis Wave or when I do it does the flashback cost become three green and x=0.
So Genesis Wave in the graveyard Snapcaster Mage enters the battlefield. Genesis Wave gets flashback. Can I now cast Genesis Wave from my graveyard for say 5 green mana (for example) that is x=3? Thanks.

Bummer I may have just lost a comp due to that... I should really have a bit more confidence in my understanding of the rules.
Dont mean to be rude but does anyone know a specific rule I could refer to as the guy who gave me the wrong ruling is usually quite knowledgeable and may take some convincing...

This is as close to specific rules as I can recall right now. Essentially equal to its mana cost is equal to the symbols on the card for its mana cost.
202.1. A cards mana cost is indicated by mana symbols near the top of the card. (See rule 107.4.) On most cards, these symbols are printed in the upper right corner. Some cards from the Future Sight set have alternate frames in which the mana symbols appear to the left of the illustration.
202.1a The mana cost of an object represents what a player must spend from his or her mana pool to cast that card. Unless an objects mana cost includes Phyrexian mana symbols (see rule 107.4f), paying that mana cost requires matching the color of any colored mana symbols as well as paying the generic mana indicated in the cost.
601.2b If the spell is modal the player announces the mode choice (see rule 700.2). If the player wishes to splice any cards onto the spell (see rule 702.45), he or she reveals those cards in his or her hand. If the spell has alternative or additional costs that will be paid as its being cast such as buyback, kicker, or convoke costs (see rules 117.8 and 117.9), the player announces his or her intentions to pay any or all of those costs (see rule 601.2e). A player cant apply two alternative methods of casting or two alternative costs to a single spell. If the spell has a variable cost that will be paid as its being cast (such as an X in its mana cost; see rule 107.3), the player announces the value of that variable. If a cost that will be paid as the spell is being cast includes hybrid mana symbols, the player announces the nonhybrid equivalent cost he or she intends to pay. If a cost that will be paid as the spell is being cast includes Phyrexian mana symbols, the player announces whether he or she intends to pay 2 life or the corresponding colored mana cost for each of those symbols. Previously made choices (such as choosing to cast a spell with flashback from a graveyard or choosing to cast a creature with morph face down) may restrict the players options when making these choices.

There isn't a specific rule with this. The flashback cost given to Genesis Wave by Snapcaster Mage is the mana cost of Genesis Wave , which is XGGG. You are allowed to pay any value for X (as well as any alternative and additional costs, were there any).
702.32a Flashback appears on some instants and sorceries. It represents two static abilities: one that functions while the card is in a player's graveyard and the other that functions while the card is on the stack. "Flashback [cost]" means "You may cast this card from your graveyard by paying [cost] rather than paying its mana cost" and "If the flashback cost was paid, exile this card instead of putting it anywhere else any time it would leave the stack." Casting a spell using its flashback ability follows the rules for paying alternative costs in rules 601.2b and 601.2e - g.

If he questions you, reference Devil's Play , a spell with X in its flashback cost. (And conveniently 3 colored symbols, so it draws a good parallel.)

Yeah, he was saying that because the flashback cost "is equal to its mana cost" it would be 0ggg. This would be the case if it said "CONVERTED mana cost" but alas. The funny thing is Ive been playing the combo since the innistrad pre release (I pulled a snapcaster mage :-)) and never questioned myself until then. Lessons learnt...

Yes. The flashback cost of Genesis Wave (via Snapcaster Mage) is XGGG. You can pay 5 mana, with X = 2. This is because the flashback cost is equal to Genesis Wave's mana cost.
