Snapcaster, sorceries, and flashback
Asked by Apoptosis 12 years ago
Ok, I'm sure this has been asked a million times, but I just got my play set of snappys and am thinking about what tricks will work and those that don't.
First: if I cast snappy and target a sorcery in my graveyard, does the sorcery still resolve at regular speed? I'm guessing no. So for example, I can't use Mr. Snappy during combat in a neat trick to recast that new 1G sorcery that makes a creature +5/+5 (using my phone and can't remember the name Py... Something).
If I cast Mr. Snappy on my opponents turn, I can target and cast a sorcery in my graveyard and it resolves at sorcery speed. More specifically, Mr Snappy goes onto the stack, I name the card, the stack resolves, then I can cast the sorcery, but everything that was on the stack resolves first, if it was during combat, all that resolves first, then I can cast the sorcery. Is this correct? I need to clearly understand how the timing resolves flashing in Mr. Snappy during combat.
Last: I cast Snapcaster Mage and target Increasing Savagery . It costs 2GG to cost because snappy says the flashback cost is its original casting cost. However, since IS Is being cast from the graveyard, target creature gets 10 counters. Correct? Similarly if I targeted Lingering Souls with snappy I can cast it for 1W. Correct?
Part 2 meant that I can cast a sorcery during my opponents turn but it still occurs at sorcery speed. Damn I shouldn't post with my phone first thing in the morning...

Snapcaster Mage only gives a sorcery or instant card in your graveyard flashback until end of turn. It doesn't override any timing restrictions. If you give flashback to a sorcery card in your graveyard during your opponent's turn, you've effectively wasted your Snapcaster Mage 's ETB ability because you will not be able to cast that card from your graveyard as you can only cast sorceries during YOUR main phases. If a card that you target with Mage's ETB ability already has Flashback, it will get another instance of it and you can choose which one of those costs you want to pay. It's the same with Varolz, the Scar-Striped which will give all creatures in your graveyard Scavenge. Creatures that already have Scavenge will have two instances of it and you will be able to choose which one of them you want to use.

Part 1 - You can only flashback sorceries at sorcery speed, so Snapcasting a sorcery will only let you cast it anytime you can cast a sorcery.
Part 2 - You can't flashback sorceries at all during your opponent turn, because sorceries can only be cast during your own main phase.
Part 3 - Your interpretation is correct. You get the awesome Increasing Savagery effect for the original casting cost. And yes, you could recast Lingering Souls for 2W.

Flashback does not ignore timing restriction even if given by Snapcaster Mage
so in the first part you are correct, you can't cast sorceries during combat. On the second part there are multiple points that require correction. First, you can't cast sorcery speed spells on your opponents turn unless you have additional cards saying you can ignore that restriction such as Hypersonic Dragon
. So no matter if it's combat or no you can't flash back a sorcery on your opponents turn. If on the other hand you target an instant you need to wait until Snapcaster Mage
has resolved from the stack until you can cast your flash backed instant but you don't need to wait for the whole stack to resolve.
On the third part you are correct on both cases. Increasing Savagery
is still cast from graveyard even if you use the flashback cost given by snapcaster also you can cast Lingering Souls
for 2W if needed.

The moral of the story, summarized: giving a card Flashback doesn't also give it Flash. Flashback lets you cast a spell from an unusual zone, not at an unusual time.

I believe if you do use flashback/ snapcaster mages effect it exiles the card right? so there would be no point in flashbacking lingering souls with the mage

fights there would be if I wasn't playing black or didn't have black mana, but you're correct that Snappy exiles the card.

but Gather the Townsfolk wouldn't be too bad to flashback with the snappy.
