Snapcaster Mage and Additional Costs

Asked by aboothby 13 years ago

If I use Snapcaster Mage to flashback Kuldotha Rebirth or Infernal Plunge , do I have to sacrifice a creature/artifact? The confusion is just that Snapcaster's text reads 'flashback cost is equal to its mana cost', so I didn't know if sacrificing is an 'additional cost' it would be absorbed in the new flashback cost.

Because the spells use the term "additional cost", it is always present. So yes, you will still have to pay additional costs.

702.32a Flashback appears on some instants and sorceries. It represents two static abilities: one that functions while the card is in a player's graveyard and the other that functions while the card is on the stack. "Flashback [cost]" means "You may cast this card from your graveyard by paying [cost] rather than paying its mana cost" and "If the flashback cost was paid, exile this card instead of putting it anywhere else any time it would leave the stack." Casting a spell using its flashback ability follows the rules for paying alternative costs in rules 601.2b and 601.2eg.

The flashback cost only replaces the mana cost of a spell. It does not exempt you from paying required additional costs. You will still have to pay those.

I've been wondering as well about snapcaster and flashback for dismember? Can I flashback dismember for 1 and 4 life?

Yes. Since the flashback cost includes Phyrexian mana, you may pay for it with life and/or the appropriate-colored mana.

The significant part of that being that Snapcaster states that the flashback cost is equal to its mana cost, and Phyrexian mana is a kind of mana cost. If there were any instants or sorceries with Snow mana in their costs (there's not), then the flashback cost would involve Snow mana as well.
